I use a DEKA dry cell battery.  The guy made them to outlast the optimas.  He was tired of them dieing early.
The battery I have has been awesome.  Left my lights on for 9 hrs and when i went to start my truck it acted like it was fully charged.  Ive had it in my truck for 2 yrs now without a single issue.
They cost 125 bucks and are rated at 750 CCA but when tested they always show 1150 CCA. So they are wicked strong.
I get them local here in Nor Cal but im sure you can search for where they are sold near you.

X2 Odysseys are the best. Optima has been bought out a couple of years ago and they are a pile now. I once saw a youtube vid of a guy taking a new Optima apart and a old one and comparing them. The new Optimas are just made to cheap and don't hold up in the long run to offroad use.

i heard odyssey was the new battery to get.

I have an older red top and an Odyssey deep cycle hooked up, and I can say that I have ran my stereo system ( 4 speakers and a 10in woofer) for over 10 hours straight and still had over 12v in the batteries.  Those batteries just put in work!!!

Are the Odyssey's traditional inside or are they Gel?

I'm going to check out the DEKA one as well.

I've been seeing a lot of these threads lately and it makes me bummed.  the red topped optima i've had for 5 years now has never once had a problem, but doesn't sound like that is how they are made at all anymore.

Enersys is the manufacturer I guess. From some brief research, they seem to be the new Gold Standard in all kinds of batteries. The best in the world they say...Hmmm like I said, I am very happy with mine, though I didn't know it was an Enersys battery.

We have also heard this. I have a red top from 2004 and its still going as strong as ever (I've even completely killed it twice) and yet we've heard of red tops no more than 1 or 2 yrs old that have already gone bad. I only know vague info, but apparently when Optima was sold a few years ago, the battery acid being used is no longer pure and is now part recycled acid. I'm sure someone will post up with new info. When the time comes for a new battery, I am gonna go with something other than Optima.

Absorbed Glass Mat...that is what is being called the Spiral Wound Technology because it's a Glass Mat that is rolled into each cell. That's why the casing looks like a Six Pack.

Part of why AGM batteries appear to fail is because they get charged incorrectly. Unlike regular lead/acid batteries, you can't blast them with a charger...they will not charge! They have to be charged very slowly and they will last.  The best analogy of this I've heard was to compare an AGM battery to a Martini Glass...if you fill it too quickly it just spills over the sides and never actuall fills up. On the other hand, the slower you charge it (or fill the glass) the steadier and fuller it will fill and maintain. Comprende?  :beerchug:

There is still liquid in there, I've had one leak on me, and I understand the quality of this liquid decreased when the company was bought out.

Yes, there is still liquid in there. That is what is absorbed in the glass mat material. It's the sprial wound design that allows them to withstand vibration much better than a convention lead/acid battery which, next to plate warpage, is the biggest killer for a lead/acid battery. 8)
