CARB FLOAT LEVEL ON '85 22r?
« on: May 27, 2011, 01:22:00 AM »
Ok , so when i rebuilt my carb i adjusted the float close to fsm specs but i left it a little lower to help with the bog on inclines. So NOW i have the motor running with the rebuilt carb installed and realized the float level is way HIGH!. It runs good in the first three gears doing speeds up to around 50, HOWEVER once i start going any faster and get into 4th gear is falls on its face like its starving for gas or is flooding. So my actual question is will an excessively high float level cause this stumbling in 4th gear with speeds around 50ish mph?

PS. I am thinking that when i am gaining speed there is more sloshing of fuel in the bowl and its flooding the motor with just a little too much fuel considering that the fuel level line is at the very top of the sight glass ......but let me know what you guys think and if you have any detailed tips or instructions to readjust my float level when i get back in there! Thanks in advance!

if you rebuilt it you know how to pull the top of the carb off.  turn it upside down and set the float so its about 3/8 inch from the bottom of the top of the carb.  (lower the float)

if doing this doesnt help then i'd say your cam is off 1 tooth.

Ya i am gonna take it apart today, but i am gonna have to figure out why it was so high when a set it to pretty much FSM spec. i will take some pics for you of the float level as it is right now and then take some of the float distances when i take it down.

I don't think its the cam because it would be very consistent in each gear once i got to a certain rpm ...right?

here are the factory specs compared to where my float actually is... i think i can adjust it a little bit but not sure how much it takes to make a difference in fuel level?? They are a little on the high side i think... Should i leave the "Float Drop Level" at the factory 48mm and only be adjusting the "Dry Float Level"? and just to clear things up do i bring the top of the float closer to the top of the carb to "lower" it? Thanks!

Little on the high side...

I know what its supposed to look like. The problem it getting it there! i have now been adjusting the tab for the float hieght and its VERY VERY sensitive to adjustments if i go up to far it will leave the bowl empty but if its a little to low the bowl just fill up all the way!  :smack: Are the adjustments normally this temperamental??? because it's either all the way full or all the way empty to the point were it will shut off.

Anybody know or have any tips with this?? Because i have had the top of the carb off about 10 times already and i am getting frustrated......

I was having the same problem. Turned out my fuel pump was putting out too much pressure and holding the needle seat and float open. So it kept choking out.

That's Exactly what i was thinking so i put one of those after market regulators on and it did seem to work if i set it around 3 psi the bowl would actually empty out. But right now its way on the full side and i took it on a drive and it was fine so iam at a lose! It bucked really bad and noticeable when i had it regulated to around 3 psi and the bowl was emptying out, however when the bowl was really full the bucking was slightly less but still noticeable....getting very frustrating! P.S. all the bucking was happening in either 3rd or 4th gear while accelerating aggressively, if that means anything.

sounds like it may be starving for fuel, if  your thinking its running rich from over full then it would blow black smoke out the exhaust.  I think its starving for fuel by the time you get to 4th or 5th just my thought. check fuel pressure. is yours a mechanical pump??
