20r/22r Hybrid. Is it worth building?
« on: May 15, 2011, 10:26:43 PM »
I have a 87 pickem up with a messed up 22r. The the head is warped and the #3 cam journal is toast. I have been researching the 20r/22r hybrid and am riding the razors edge to going that route. I found a guy that has the early 22r block and 20r head with intake. Is it as easy as building the 22r? Is there any thing that I need to know about it? Is it worth building over just rebuilding my 22r? Is there an adapter for the 22r carb? I am kinda having a hard time finding a real pros/cons and how to write up on this hybrid.  My only other option is another guy I know may have a 22re head and I would just rebuild my 22r (hence riding the razors edge). I just really want to get my truck runnin again so I can do some wheelin.I have read that putting 22r valves, cam and rockers in it makes it better. Any help is greatly appreciated!

20r heads flow better and are a good upgrade in power, have to so a little machining though and it takes alittle more research and whatnot to get the hybrid put together right without having issues. The late 22r and 22re heads are the same, the early 22r heads have a domed combustion chamber to go with the domed pistons it is really easy to tell the difference on those heads. I guess the real question is, do you wanna spend more money to build the 20r/22r hybrid OR go with an easier 22r build? plus if you have you late 22r you can upgrade to EFI in the future without having to swap out heads and rebuild another setup...

If money is tight I'd say stick to a solid 22r build!

EFI swap
get a complete truck, wrecked or rusted out
there for you will have everything you need, and no guessing putting together

the 20/22 engine is a waste in my opinion
after all that its still a carb, I hate them damn things

actually if you wind up piecing the efi together I have some misc parts Ill send you for free,
Im sure others on here will send you others for shipping charge

the 20/22 hybrid is a much better engine but going from a re to the hybrid  isnt a good option for anyone living above 2000 feet or that goes over that elevation.

I found a 22r head for $75. I am going to go that route and do the EFI swap. It seems like the better way for me to go at this point and the altitude that I live at justifies it a lil more
