Besides the tide rolling in and out all day (-5'), no big deal in Santa Cruz.  The harbor got all smashed up, and everyone got all freaked.

I am sure the gas prices will climb x2 as fast now, kitty in the well syndrome.

The worst of it, for Japan, is...there are (I believe) 5 reactors at 2 separate power plants have cooling systems that have been damaged.

Man this is really crazy.

My wife has been talking to her family in Japan (they live over 750 miles south-west on a different island so they are safe) and many friends of hers who work in Tokyo.... It's a huge mess! They had over 50 aftershocks all over 6.0, and this is the 5th largest quake on record since 1900. :o

I was wondering how they were doing, good to hear everything is OK with them, I didn't want to just throw that out there. A pretty sad event for the others though, earthquake wasn't bad enough then a tsunami and now at least one possible nuke meltdown. They are a strong people though and will rise from this even better than before.

From what I can tell, the Ferndale/Humboldt coastline received little to no damage but Crescent City and Santa Cruz got hit pretty hard.

Its all gonna come down to the shape and slope of the terrain under the sea. In areas with a sharper rise in seafloor as you approach shore, the greater the height/impact of the tsunami.

Can you guarentee the validity of the site linked for US residents?  I'm always a bit leery of these types of things.

Understandable. This is the site my wife and I used to donate a good amount of money. She was referred to it by a Japanese site so I'm pretty sure it's legit.

There have got to be many more sites like rocksurfer mentioned, so take a look around

Dude what is up with all the reactor crap? I heard they are using super old technology that doesn't use an isolated cooling system and all sorts of missing fail safes :o

Here is another option for giving.

From what I've heard the reactors are super old...for reactors, 40-50 years old. Still, look at what they got hit with, what it took to make them go tits up.
