22r timming
« on: Feb 06, 2011, 11:44:36 AM »
hello everyone

ive got the old girl running again  :driving: and im setting the timing if i remember correcty they run best at around +8deg advanced. but smog info says +5deg

either way i keep restabing the distributor to achive 8deg but with no luck ive either got a range of -2 to +5 or
+12 to +20 im guessing because the marks only go to +12

i feel like when im stabing it im only moving 1 tooth.

does anyone have any advice

I run my truck at 5 deg and just got it smogged and passed 3 days ago.  Also if your not removing and plugging the 2 vacuum lines then it will read 12 or more.  The factory spec for a 1st gen engine timing is 8 deg @ 950 rpm's.
I run at 5 deg since it gives me better mpg and power on the freeway.

Its not gonna be centered like a RE engine would be.  It will pretty much always be rotated all the way clockwise.  If u get it to 5 then your fine and leave it there.   Try it at 5 and see how u like it.  Change it to 8-10 deg and see how it runs for u.  Every engine has its own sweet spot.

If it has A little miss at idle and the carb had been rebuilt already then it might just be the idle mixture screw isnt adjusted right.  Or It could be vacuum lines if it sat.

The idle mixture screw isnt a set turn out.  Start your truck and let it warm up to normal operating temps.    To adjust the it you back off the idle screw until the idle rmps stop raising.  This is where you want it.  I cant tell you how many turns out it is but if I were to guess its around 8 or more.  In pretty much every carb I adjust, its pretty close to the same.  As for the vacuum lines,  I was referring to them being cracked or just plain old and hard.  Which can cause a decent leak.
If your idle mixture screw is only 2-3 turns out then that explains the rough idle.  I would start there then check cold idle setting.  If this is set incorrect it will cause a rough idle.  I set mine to 2300 rpms.  Toyota spec is 2600 I believe.

Ok ill try that when I get home from work thanks I was under that impression because when I rebuilt my carb a few years ago it said that was factory stock and not to adust it.
Where is the cold idle adustment?
