94 22re timming prob
« on: Jun 11, 2007, 02:30:15 PM »
I searched, I read, and i still don't know. I have a 94 22re just replaced timming chain and cover. When i was setting the timming i put the motor at tdc put distributor on #1 cylinder started the motor jumped e1 with te1 idle dropped slightly. then i set it to 5 degress tightened it double check then pulled the jumper off and it only advanced to 8-10 degress. I did this about 3 times with the same results. engine runs like poo revs up slow and is a little louder than normal. Sorry about the novel and thanks for all the help.

I think you are wasting your time using a timing light.  Set the timing by ear and by the way the engine runs.  I always set mine this way and it has always worked great for me.  Just make sure the timing isn't too far advanced and begins to detonate.

if you are trying to smog it, you might run into issues with it not timed according to the light.... i got failed for that once..... my timing was on spot too, (verified by 2 mechanics and myself right after) i just had low idle, but he tagged me for timing 20* advanced because he had to write something down..... he was pissed though... just didn't seem happy to be working there

I have never had a problem with smog.  In fact, mine passed on the clean side.  Lights don't always work for some of these older engines.

This is very helpfull. I have been tooling around with an 86 that has no power at all. It will idle smoot as could be, but as soon as I put it in gear (auto) the motor gets pulled down some and it sputters. As I try to take off from a stop it is gutless and at cruising speed it is fine till I give it enough gas to downshift.

I set the timing at 5* advanced with the jumper in as the tag under the hood stated.

Am I right to think I should adjust the timing for more advance till I achive the throtle response This truck should have? I have started looking in other areas besides the timing too. Could  there be issues with the tps?

yep...... probably just one tooth!!!! pull the cap off, pull the dist out and turn it one tooth then start it and see how that sounds... if it sound like :pokinit:, turn it back to how you pulled it out then one tooth the other way... dont forget which way you turned it though!!! its not that tough!!

i would double check the the cam gear is lined up to the crank... when both are at 12 o clock, the cam is really about 11 o clock

i bet its a tooth off too, but remember theres only like about 30 teeth so 1 tooth is like 10+ degrees, puull the cap set #1 @ tdc, and just check your cap to see if its lined up (thats at the middle of the adjuster slider thingiee too) then set your timing with the light after all that is verified. (although, if it ran fine where it was, it should run fine back there)

I just rebuilt a 22RE for a customer, and i'm more used to dealing with the 22R motors. When i start it, it idles Really rough. I've tried moving the distributor one tooth forward, one back, but no improvement.

It was a full rebuild and i know i got the crank/ cam timing right, so i'm stumped. It's the first rebuild of mine that hasn't just started right up...but it's also the first fuel-injected motor. Anybody got any ideas?

yours might be an issue of the tps or soemthing.... i have no idea about the re, otehr than if its mechanically ok, then its probably an electrical problem

I did a compression check today, No Pressure in #2 cylinder. Guess that could make it run rough, eh? Turned out i had the exhaust valve for that cylinder set way too tight and the valve was staying open. Gapped it to .012, ran fine. Set the timing, ran better.

Yay!! It's finally gone! Customer picked it up this evening.

ok so i moved the timing chain forward a tooth. it sounds a little smoother the throttle response still sucks until you get it up above 2500rpms then it runs great. ANY IDEAS? this motor has 225,ooo mile so i'm going to adjust the valve springs this weekend ''i can hear a little chadder in there''. Muffler has a bigass hole in it so that needs to be fixed as well.
