biggest tire on IFS?
« on: Feb 01, 2011, 09:54:22 AM »
My question is how big can you go on an IFS if fender clearance is not an issue and the rig will not be doing any rockcrawling?

Not worried about fender clearance since there won't be any fenders...

Just curious how well the IFS will hold up with 38s cruisin' around on dirt roads and sand.

a buddy of mine had 38s with a four inch suspension lift and 5" of body lift (I gave him the suspension lift in hopes that he would remove the three inch body lift from the stack, or even just the two inch from the stack, NAH he just put on bigger tires)
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

i remember a kid when i was in highschool had a 90 i think.... ran 44s with the ifs...    think he had a 4 or 6" and 3" body lift... had to have 571s but he ran it out in the sand and played in the mud with it.....

I also remember he only had it for like 3 weeks cause he broke a tierod coming over a bridge in the hills and hit the bank on the other side.... little ditch, big rollover lol

Trim the fenders back and cut the wheel well back in to the body mount and you can put 35"s on with no lift at all.

gotta chime in,

DIRT ROADS, SAND.

open front and rear?

Ive seen trucks rolling around florida with 39.5s, with 4" suspension, 3" body and trimmed body metal.

using 4wd just fine too, BUT if you have to use low range or slip the clutch at all, your gonna break something

How the heck did you turn, my buddies were almost rubbing the wheel well with 35"s.

With 2" bodylift and 37x14,5 on 10" rims with ET-43, I had no rubbing. Now it does, but I am going to move the cabinfasten, and cut some more

I had a 1990 4runner with a 4.5inch suspension lift, with a 3inch body lift.  36in. ssr's on 15x8's, 5.29's, 3.slow, ran like a champ.  I wish sometimes I wouldn't have sold it.  Never had any rub issues.  Drove the thing down the freeway at 70 with no issues.  It was a street queen though.  I would have never taken it into the rocks.  Snow and sand, sure. But with ifs, not the rocks. here is a link if you want to see pics...

bog and bleak can vouch for this. I ran 35x12.50 on my 90 runner with no lift what so ever. i used coil seperators to fix the rear end sag back to stock. and i used a bfh and grinder, to the pinch weld. i did not cut the firewall at all like people do. ran in fine in the dunes no issues with the 4.10s and it pushed them around fine in town and highway was a lil slow but it as a 3.slow auto.
I would say with out regearing or beefing the cvs up some 35s would be fine. regear and run 37s and give it hell. anything bigger i don't like the looks on yotas but for sand and light offroad i dont see why you would have such a issue with 40s. if your geared you could probably do most stuff in sand in 2wd. me and bog used to go to the sand alot and he did almost everything in 2wd with 31s, i did most in 2wd in my runner some times i'd need low just because of the gearing.
pictures for proof.

and it spun them enough to get muddy to if your worried about it

sorry to hijack with pictures

one more just for reference this is the pinch weld you need to hammer back and grind down some and smooth then hit it with primer

Keep 'em comin' gang.  I'm gettin' excited to build another rig.  It's been a couple years.

I just got the first half of the project last night.  An '86 standard cab 4wd...  Hopefully have the other truck (for parts) this evening or the next day.

best pics i can find.......  35's downey bars cranked...hammered firewall thats it,  obviously little flex.... but only minimal rubbing on rear of fender...

Backspacing and tire width were optimal...

i miss that truck

I ran 36's on 4inch bracket lift, 2'' bj spacer and relaxed Tbars to about 3inches of lift. Rubbed fenders at full lock and stuff.

my buddys 90 runner has 38.5/15/15 boggers on it 4inch suspension and 3 inch body no rubbing. He wants 44's but i have no clue how that will work.

i have seen 44's on an IFS with the old stackable IFS bracket lifts.
87 longbed bobbed 12inches, locked, geared,Tacoma dash, 3rz swap Its a never ending project.

I've run up to 35's on IFS with only a 2 inch body lift, shaved bumpstops, cranked up the torsion bars a little to match a 1 1/2 inch shackle. The body lift gets those wheelwells up off the tires.

I ran 35s on my IFS and wheeled the heck out of it....

did this FINE

wasnt till THIS, that I had a problem. and it wasnt the IFS that gave way, but the cheap welded tube steering for the IFS lift kit

just upgrade it with a longtravel kit that uses t100 cv axles and not worry about it. lock it up and run 37's. that's what i woulda done if my truck wasn't sased when i got it.
