electronic vs mechanical speedo cable?
« on: Jan 12, 2011, 06:33:10 PM »
I am trying to figure out which type of speedo cable I have. I have a 95 4runner 3.0 auto. I read that all of those should be an electronic speedo cable, but I can't seem to find any type of electronic plug anywhere. I have my speedo cable and it looks like its mechanical.

Am I missing something?

LOL....look at your t-case, if you have a cable going into your speed sensor....then your speedo is cable driven. If you see a plug going into your speed sensor, it's electronically driven. That's the simplest way to find out, or you can take your bezel off and pull your cluster out to find out (which is obviously where the other end of the cable goes into).
Toyota couldn't decide what to use apparently... late 92 and up, Toyota decided to go with electronic and then 95 they went back to cable. My trucks a 93, it has electronic speedometer. Currently in the process of converting it to cable. My wife had a 95 22re 4runner that was cable driven. There's 2 sizes of cables...22re and 22r's share the same one and the 3.0 has it's own.

Cool. Thanks. I guess it is cable then. I bought the Marlincrawler vss based on the fact that I figured newer models were probably electronic,  so I guess I'm gonna eat $50 . Anyway thanks again.

Ok so here is a question can you swap an electronic speedo cable where a cable one was.  i am also working on a buggy and want to go with an aftermarket gauge cluster and electronic would be easiest.
