Spell check/punctuation in posts

Perhaps I am alone in thinking this way, but spelling, sentence structure, and poor English in general makes me insane. Between here and Craigslist, I am loosing faith in our school system. As far as I know, all computers have some sort of spell check, and mine is set to show up any possible incorrectly spelled words without spell checking after I am done writing, so there should not be any excuse for errors while typing on a machine that will tell you when you're wrong!
My second problem, and one that your computer will not help you with, is punctuation. If you have just written a sentence that's 6 lines long, chances are it probably needs some punctuation (comma, period, exclamation mark, the list goes on). I can't figure out what about 25% of the posts on here are trying to convey due to this.
It may seem insignifigant, and doesn't matter to any great degree on here (other than making me personally lose my mind), but one's communication skills, written and verbal, say a lot about you in life. If someone is dealing with you in your career or otherwise, their impression of you is going to be largely based upon them, so feel free to try to hone your skills here.

Please people, don't destroy the King's English!

Touché. I didn't think to search for a language problem on a Toyota forum, but you are correct. Hopefully the people it is intended to help can accept criticism as well.

yjay, I TOTALLY agree.  and I don't use perfect grammar but I sure as hell  do NOT replace 'anyone' with 'ne1'  or 'would' with 'wud'.

It drives me NUTS.   :willynilly:

I agree with Glen, leave the texting to your personal phone.  I've recently read posts by a couple of people on two different forums recently that made anythign that I've read here seem excellent in comparison.  They wrote so poorly I actually wonder if they are delayed or just plain crazy.

As for writing skill being a excellent job skill, even if you have someone review your resume you will still have to display your writing skills at some point and it can really hurt advancement.  Managers need writing skills.

I struggle with their vs. they're often, not because I don't know the difference.  It strange, but it on my personal list of things that I struggle with along with three or four words that I can never seem to spell.

Oh, try to avoid double and triple negatives, they really change the meaning of your sentance.  For example, "I don't not know," really means that you do.

As much as I agree with the spirit of this (and the other) thread, it will do little good -- other than venting, which is okay too. Many "texting" posters simply do not see a problem, nor do they care. Some will criticize and call you names for bringing up the subject.

Reminds me of the movie "Idiocracy".   :screwy:

Eh, who cares? Some people cant spell or punctuate? I dunno, I always did real well at english, I read a bunch, but im not gonna spell check my stuff if I see 3 squiggly lines in my posts, u guys should be smart enough to make sense of it. Now the posts that are all in lowercase, no periods, all commas, one big ass run on sentence, I hate those things. And as far as the text thing, maybe thats one fo those too old things? Its almost 2011, get used to it, it isnt goin anywhere, its only going to get worse, ne1 knows that. :beerchug:

I agree. As a school teacher of 6th graders, it gets old getting papers that read like a text message. I try HARD to fix that!!

What gets me is the typing of a phone number i.e. five-five-nine 292-012six. What the heck? (and that's a random number so don't call it)

...its only going to get worse...

It seems that we agree.  People like to believe that we're improving as a nation and/or world, but it's obvious at almost every level that we're degenerating.

I had someone point out to me the other day that the push to make ebonics a recognized language has seemingly gone away.  I hadn't really noticed, but it's certainly not in the news anymore and as far as I know still isn't officially recognized.

I agree with most.  I sometimes have spelling or grammar issues, but I think most can figure it out.  I am certainly not in class here, nor have I been in 20+ years.  I don't think forums are a place to get all anal about punctuation or spelling.  I certainly won't use text abbreviations here, or on my phone.  Next, I guess we need to go back to everyone's posts, to see if they are correct (including the original poster).  I do agree some peoples posts are really hard to read, at all.

The Marlin spell check is a complete failure, it has a hard time with HTML code, SAS, SFA, TRE, RUF, etc.  If we are going to be corrected, then all those abbreviations fail (they need alot of periods).  I personally don't use spellcheck, here......cause even spellcheck is spelled wrong, or doesn't have a space.

It bugs me that people do not know when to use the proper word. Their, they're, there is a good example.

Yup Linux has all that going for it...

As for Destroying the king's ( note the PUNCTUATION to show possession/ownership)  English... You Americans killed it a long time ago. Take the word "COLOR" YOU spell it color, I can spell it colour or color, the ENGLISH spell it COLOUR... and lets not get in to Pronouns, and conjunctions.   We speak a different dialect in Canada and the States but we both speak some thing called "English".

On a side note, a study of IQ to speak patterns showed that people with higher IQ's tend to develop Sub-dialects with in close social or relational-ship groups.
They defined a Sub-dialect, as one were a conversation is carried out by using words and tones of voice that are not normally use together to pass information, or expression of feelings, intention and/or acceptance .   When ask how high a person's IQ would have to be, the researchers were defined the limit as a higher functioning person.    :headscratch:

Don't ask me I just read the Paper.. :dunno:

NO it IS going somewhere, out the damned door.   It is not only lazy but it also makes the person using such spelling come across as having an IQ that makes Forest Gump look like Einstein.

My daughter (public schooled) recently was offered (practically guaranteed) a job in a doctor friends office.  All she had to do was present a resume` to him. He understood she didn't have much work experience but wanted to see if she had the grammar skills to perform the job.
I told her to do her best and that's what she did especially after telling her she could potentially make $500 a week.   When I asked him about her he looked pretty sad.  I knew she hadn't done well by his expression.    Needless to say, she hadn't used any punctuation and made numerous spelling errors, one of which was 'ne1'.   Unfortunately unless you plan to work at making minimum wage you need to know how to convey a message CORRECTLY.

I'll be the first to admit that my grammer and spelling isn't always perfect, but I can't resist.

...and let's not get into pronouns and conjuctions.

Note: Please consider this post from a perspective of humor since a thread about grammer and spelling is likely the most entertaining place for any of us to be making mistakes.

What's really strange is that as long as you get the first and last letter correct the rest of the letter can be all mixed up and most people can still read it easily.  It amazes me that people can write so poorly that it's difficult to read and understand.

Cragslist is the worst, trailer is trailor, motor is moter, wheels are weels, a winch is a wench, warn is warren, dual is duel, custom is coustom, a hood scoop is a hood scoup, tires are tyres, a bed liner is a bed lyner, a wheelbarrow is a weel barel, a weed whacker is a wead waker... I dont even want to get into cylinder cylindar cylendar cylender...

Spellcheck would be a good feature to add, but I bet half the time when these pre-school dropouts hit the "check" button their computer would overload and burst into flames...

I can handle slang/abbreviations and incorrect grammar as long as I can understand what they are trying to say. I don't like to read it this way, but it doesn't bother me.

For those who don't adhere to standard language conventions, it is really their loss. I try to as much as I can, but I am not perfect.

I text.  In fact, since getting my phone just a week and a half ago, I text quite a bit.  And when I do, I type the full word and use most of the proper punctuation, though I do avoid some in the name of time.

That's the one that really gets me. If someone has a legitimate question or something of note to say, a gigantic run on sentence can make it all but impossible to respond to the post. Perhaps I am a dinosaur who can not adapt to the evolution of our language :dunno:
