Need help with gearing options
« on: Dec 24, 2002, 06:12:39 AM »
I have 1973 FJ40 with an Olds 403, TH400, and stock Toyota one-piece T-case....

I need to drop gear ratio at least 50% more....  I hate to give up the Th400...  I can move the motor forward 2.5-3.0"...

What  options do I have..??  new T-case, ToyBox, or ?????  what about drive line lengths...??

A toybox will double your ratio. It should fit easy with a V8. Yes you may have to move it forward some. Or move the rear axle back an inch or so. Very doable

You will need an adapter from 400 to minitruck t-case and the rear Toybox adapter. Use a mini trans/crossmember mount. We are working on a crossmember for that mount.

thanks much for the xmas eve reply...  I am still a little confused.... let's be honest, when it comes to Toyotas I'm clueless...

I have offset front and rear FJ40 axles....  and want to keep it that way...  a ton of $$$ have been invested by the previous owner in Discs, stainless brake hoses, tempered axles, Rulon oil seals, locking hubs, Gears, lockers, etc

So exactly what do I need to adapt the Th400 (BOP if it matters) to the T-case/toybox combo???

If I understand your email, the toybox will require a minitruck T-case too..???  is it shorter than the FJ40 case or am I missing the point?
