Does this sound like a legit buyer ?
« on: Dec 15, 2010, 11:00:28 PM »
Hey guys . I posted up my rig in on Craiglist today and some one has offered to buy it already with in just one day for 4k .But the email sounds kind of fishy to me and I was curious if you guys could tell or .However, the phone does look local , Seattle area code at least. I'm gonna cut n past what I got from this guys email .

Thanks for getting back to me. If the description giving is as described, then
all sounds acceptable to me and we are good to go on with the purchase.
The asking price of $4000 is fair enough.
I would be moving out of town with my Wife and 2 Kids in a few days to Seattle
and would really love to expedite the purchase before our big move.
Sorry, I would not be available for a visit nor would I be able to schedule
an appointment to come over for Inspection. I sure Hope we could work some
thing out if this wouldn't be a problem for you.
Please note that I am satisfied and willing to go ahead with the
purchase before
our big move in a few days.

* To Proceed with the Purchase, Please acknowledge if my Terms for Purchase
are acceptable by you.

* Guarantee: Hope you could Personally guarantee the Legitimacy of the
Purchase?

*Regarding the Purchase: I am willing to go ahead with the purchase on your
asking price offer of $4000 if you could stop all further inquiry into
the purchase.

*Regarding Pickup & Delivery: All Necessary Pickup and Delivery arrangement
would be handled by me personally since I would be moving in a few days.
I would make necessary arrangement with the moving company to send someone
over to make the Pickup on my behalf.

*Regarding Payment: A Certified Check for $4000 would be drawn from my bank
and made payable to you as Payment for the purchase. A Certified Check would
guarantee that funds will be available to you upon presentation at your Bank.
Either way note that the Purchase would only be scheduled for pickup when the
funds are available to you.

If this Terms and Condition for Purchase are acceptable by you, I Kindly would
request that I go ahead to make arrangement for payment.

Kindly fill out the necessary detail information required to make out
Payment to
you. I would also Preferred you provide me with a contact phone number I could
call or text at if required for more information. The Payment would be
mailed out
to you using USPS Mail Service.

I say "NO CASH, NO TRUCK!"

CL is full of scammers.....this guy sounds like one. As many cars and truck that I've bought from private party...not one has said check or money order would be okay. Same goes with me SELLING....email back "NO CASH, NO TRUCK".

Be patient, some one will buy your truck if it's worth the price.

Oh sure and when you agree he will send you a check for over the amount to pay for shipping, he will want you to give the balance to the shipper and any overage you can keep. So what do you get for all of this? Your check will bounce and you'll be out your truck and $1,000.00.

my dad owns a towing company and he gets calls all the time from "guys" that want him to pick up like 6 cars from the airport and bring them to a storage building and they want to pay a grand per car, for a 10mile tow then him refund the balance in cash, major scam just like your offer

Yeah I've had those calls too, funny thing though I don't think they realize that they had called a police garage. Didn't turn out well for them when BADCATS met them at the location. :gap:

Don't even reply.   Either some tow truck driver will show up with a bogus check or money order or simply by replying to his inquiry he will get your email address and spam the crap out of you.   Us a yahoo email address if you want to reply so if he is a spammer and if yahoo happens to let his email go through their system, who cares because its an address you don't use.

I always use a specific email address and a google voice phone number when dealing with craigslist or Ebay.

Oh, and one more thing.  In my experience never pull an ad or say something is sold until you have at least some cash in hand.  I will only hold something for someone for as long as it takes them to get from their home to mine, no longer.

Just recently two guys were arrested here in St. Louis for fraud.  They were two Romanians in their early 20's that were driving around the country to different western union locations, etc to pick up scam cash.  They had over 50,000 in cash on them when they were arrested.

YOU ONLY NEED TWO TOOLS IN LIFE - WD-40 AND DUCT TAPE. IF IT DOESN'T MOVE
AND SHOULD, USE THE WD-40. IF IT SHOULDN'T MOVE AND DOES, USE THE DUCT TAPE.

IF YOU CAN'T FIX IT WITH A HAMMER, YOU HAVE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM.

I agree, you don't buy a rig when you are moving generally you sell. I sold both my 80 Toyota and my Samurai when I moved to AZ. Wasn't my wife's idea though, she wouldn't dare tread there.

Craigslist is and has always been local and cash only since day 1.  I put that in my ads as well - local only, cash only.  And also check the return address.  The last one I got was from somethingOKsounding.lv (latvia)  - I wonder how they plan to ship something all that way...

Note - most people don't use Craigslist any more for vehicles due to it being overrun with scammers and businesses flooding the place.

As a seller, I absolutely do not post my number on craigslist.  That's all I want, tons of mouth-breathers talking my ear off or leaving messages all the time.  I do reply to emails, just as long as they're legit and the people don't come off as douches.

As a buyer, I don't call people unless it's absolutely necessary, for the same reasons.  I've found over the years that people who insist on only giving info over the phone just want to talk your ear off and think they can talk you into buying their turds.

I don't like wasting my time, and emailing is much less a hassle for me than talking on the phone.

I say "NO CASH, NO TRUCK!"

i have bought many things and sold many things on CL using other methods than cash..... just make sure it is 100% legit in your bank account before transfer of goods...

All offers to ship cars are fraud,

Not true, There are people that are interested in certain vehicles that just cannot drive 1000 plus miles to pick it up...  My dad for instance, bought shipped and recieved a car from Texas, no problems (however if you have a common model i would be suspicious) and if the e-mail looks like yours it will 99% be fraud)

Hell i know a fella that is into the Ford Edsel, he has shipped whole cars to a guy in Sweden, main thing i could say is have lots of communication, and if the buyer is serious you will know..

This is how CL should work, I HATE talking on the phone, and i do not want my number displayed out for all the crackheads to call.....  I get so many e-mails saying call me, i dont check the internet that often...  well hell, you just e-mailed me, make it a point to check your e-mail at least once a day you moron. . . .

On a side note, as a buyer and a seller on CL, I make VERY detailed posts, and my replys are usually short and to the point, if you have a drawn out e-mail like the one above with a sob story and whatever, it is either a scam or someone that is going to try and jew you down when they arrive to "purchase" said part....BTW i dont like to haggle either so i put WHAT I WANT for the item, its too bad there are so many people that put more just so they can be talked down... If i only have 3000 to spend im not going to be looking for a 4000 dollar rig.....
Those are some huge welds!
