Project: More Clearance 2- INSTALLED!!!
« on: Jan 06, 2005, 08:14:19 PM »
I scored a front axle and a rear axle today.  Front is missing thirdmember and nuckles, it has the hubs and rotors though.  The rear is an IFS that is also missing a third.  Both come with axles. The front axle did come with nuckels but the studs are either gone or sheared off.  There are 2 bolts sheared off of one and three on the other.  I am going to be clearancing them just like the Marlin crawler buggy is getting.  I got both axles and 2 sets of rear toyota leaf springs for $105.  Thats a killer deal.  Pictures to come soon.  these will go on my truck.  Gonna keep my 5.29's, put the detriot in front and weld the rear.  Im goona be making money off this cuzz i will have a few parts to sell later like the old axle housings, rear axles, and wheel spacers.

School got cancelled today so i worked on the axles at home.  I cut off all the uneeded crap like swaybar brackets and e-brake brackets from both axles.  Then i filled the hole in the rear diff.  The person who had it before me ran a limited slip and one of the bolts came loose and flew throught the housing.  I did what i could with my new angle grinder that i got for x-mas and my welder. The next thing to come off will be the gusset on the front.  I am going to relocate it to the top.  then i can start on the clearencing part.

I cleaned up both axles and we cut the gusset off today.  James got a little too happy with the torche and cut into the axle.  So we will be filling some holes tomarrow.

I took the camera to school today.  Go some pictures.

Here is were i cut the drain plug out.  It will be going ontop for easier oil filling.

The second pic is were the gusset use to be.  I cut it off, filled in the holes, and then grinded it down.  Can bearly tell it was there.

Here is the gusset we cut off.  We shortened it, it was easier to cut it off.  We had to use the torch becasue we didn't have any cutting blades for the angle grinder.

BTW.  Jack8542 on here is helping me with the axles.  We did the extra cab swap on his toy a little while back, we also did some axle modes to his.

Here is were i cut off the old U-bolt bad on the bottom of the axle.  I will be getting an MC flip kit si i didn't need it.  I kept the rest of it on to help line up the U-bolts.  I cut it off at home with my angle grinder with a cutting wheel then grinded it smooth.

Here is the gusset welded on to the top.  I might extend the gusset to the spring pad.  Thats all we got done today.

The cutting on the dif begins.  Here it is.  Kinda scared at first, then i went by fast.  I used an angle grinder with a cutoff wheel to cut the whole thing off.  pictures are a little blery.

Grinded.  The second pic is the middle piece of metal i made.  Beat it with a BFH for the side bends, and the main bend we heated it up with a torche.  It has loads of room for gear lube, more then i would have wanted.

More.  I tacked it on and then started on a side piece.  I didn't get to finish it.  Will work on it more tomarrow.  I am working on it at school, so we only have limited time to work on it.

Today i finished the bottom plates and welded them on from the outside.  I still have to weld them on the inside and make the dif cover.  I won't be able to work on it till next tuesday.  No pictures yet.

Side of the dif cover.  We heated it up and bent it with a bfh.  It contures (sp?) to the dif on both sides.  And I welded the inside of the bottom so hopefully it won't leak.  Thats it for today.  I still have to put the side pieces on the dif cover and grind it all down.  then i need to weld on another shock mount.

I haven't decided yet.  I might try to bend them back and then reinforce them like Marlin Crawlers axle.  Or i might just fill up the messed up parts with small pieces od metal and welds.  I am thinking the first choice though.

I'm by no means the greatest welder.  But that is some ugly :pokinit: on your axle.  But, props for doing it. You gotta learn somehow.

Heres my shave I just finished.

That big bead isn't welding anything together.  I needed to fill in a low spot so i filled it in with welding.  If i welded that bad i would kill myself.

What ever day Jared and them were planning on going.

I welded on the new fill plug inside and out.  Then i arc welded the spider gears in the third member that will go in there.  I put a small plate in the bottom of the third member to help it slide over rocks like csudman did.
