Toyota Ex Custom Cab
« on: Dec 01, 2010, 09:22:58 AM »
So I've been looking to buy a custom cab and when search the web I found this guy saying he had an ex cab custom cab version only one made so I email cause I had to see pictures. I can't tell if I like it or now :dunno:  I think if you got rid of the ex cab window and sheet metal it in. But anyways I figured I would share this

I don't know if it would look any better with the window covered in sheet metal or not, it is a bit busy around the seam.  If the seal were painted to match the truck, it might look a little better.

You might play with it on photo shop, color in the windows to match the truck, same with the seam.

If it was all painted black, the X-cab window might not look as bad.

The wheelbase on the regular custom cabs is insane, like 147" I think. Looks kind of strange to me personally.

You do know that they were not built by Toyota that way. I have never looked underneath one to see how they made the frame longer. Nothing really wrong with a 2-piece d-shaft, it is the center bearing, which I got rid of and replaced it with a pillow block bearing.

Well I just got back from SAC arena to go buy one that a guy bad on craiglist and let me tell you the way they stretched these thing is HORRIBLE lol. But I do agree with the seal. When I finally find one I like I will be getting rid of that seal and trying something different or atleast find a better looking seal and paint over it. The seal is to big and stands out. Needs like a flat one on the outside

My friend has a couple of these and he said the floor in the custom cab part isn't metal, its wood, and pretty thin at that. By now they should all be rotted or still rotting away so be ready for that to deal with. My friend is the Custom cab "guru" and he has an account here, maybe he will chime in on other things to know about these things.

Yup. Hes around somewhere. Custom cabs finally grew on me after knowing him for 7 or 8 years. Wouldn't mind building a pavement pounder one like his for putting around town or snow in. He had a pretty cool crawler one but it got jacked from the Sacramento area a couple years ago and he never found it.

I kind of want to do a reverse bob on one and shorten the wheelbase a bit. Bob the front of the bed instead of the rear. Dunno if anyones done it, there is a pic floating around of one built but its got a tube bed from the custom cab back.

I want to bob it to shorten the wheel base and the back of the bed too. I'm actually trying to build this thing for SEMA this coming year. But after see the way the frame was done I'm gonna either build a whole new replacement chassis or back half it.

I had a 78 parts truck and I agree, the way they stretched them is scary. The frame didnt look bad but the body was another story. Glue and rivets held the cabs together.

I don't really care for the fiberglass extended cabs. I've been thinking about this and how to get an older model (Which I love) with the four door use, and room. I've decided if I do this, I'm going to find a run down 4 runner, cut the body behind the rear doors and weld on a pickup back panel, and then place a small box on it. It will take some work to determine the rear wheel spacing, and any frame extensions, but I think the end result would give me a look, that appeared as if I had bought the truck from Toyota that way.
