HOLY CRAP that is horrible BirdDog. Driving on the wrong side of the road reminded me of Beijing, China.

Man, highway 280 is a wonderful, curvy, hilly highway connecting south bay to west bay and is my #1 most enjoyable section of large, metropolis-type, multilane highway in the entire state to drive. Shame to see this sort of stuff going on.

I'm surprised the CHP and the other Sheriff did not stop and get out to talk about it. I don't have any training with crowd control or law enforcement, so maybe this is an actual protocol that they don't get involved when there are possible rioters, but why not at least make a presence known? I'm not suggesting he or she writes everyone tickets for j-walking, loitering, and having their shoes untied, but by sticking around you can let them know that the law doesn't just back down? Now they will just assume there is no law. What is the worst that could happen? Are they going to kidnap an officer and hold him in a prison camp, or hold him ransom? Are they just gonna attack and kill an officer in the middle of an intersection? And if they did, the repercussion would be extreme to say the least.

I'm most likely talking out of my here. Again I have no experience with this stuff. What do you guys think? It's also possible we don't know the whole story. There could have been 50-something people behind the camera.... or the police might have shown up 30 mins later in numbers and with proper riot gear. I'd love to hear from a peace officer about this

I'd like to add that having posted the above, I also don't know what the officer would do if he or she stopped to get out and chitchat. I guess they could just let people know to be quiet, or to not disturb the peace of others I realize 1 officer would not be able to restore order, so I'm not suggesting he or she try anything brash, but just to let the people know that if they don't start winding down and if complaints continue, then many more police will show up. That seems like a harmless and non-offensive way to approach the situation. Maybe by showing kindness by not writing tickets for j-walking (or something stupid that would cause a blowback from people who clearly don't care about the law in the first place)... maybe this kindness would be met with them slowly winding down and relaxing and then just deciding to go inside to be with their families.

After all they already disregard the law & must dislike cops by association, so what if a cop decided to just be cool, shake some hands, offer anyone some bandaids or a ride home, and then say good night and hope that the citizens return kindness by actually calming down and calling it a night.

This is why I have so much respect for all law enforcement officers. It's something I do not want to deal with and have my life and my families to eternally thank them for

With the courts forcing the state to release inmates the counties are over flowing and nowhere to put new inmates why bother arresting them. where are they going to be housed ? this is our future...
Now this will all be the perfect storm for our Government to come in and take over and fix it all. Call in the military and start seizing all our guns. Ah don't you just love comm'y lib's.

I have but I've never seen the slums or high crime that I've always associated Oakland with. In fact I'll be just south of it tomorrow, meeting a customer near Ashland, so I'll be sure to visit the Oakland Ghettos and bring back some sweet videos

There is a very ghetto and lawless side to it (even in the day time) but it gets horrible at night. They've been doing this since the 80s, side shows are nothing knew. But it grew from doing donuts in intersections to the lawlessness you saw there. The cops didn't dare get out because they knew they'd got shot, jumped, or worse. They are stretched thin in the Oakland and the gangbangers know there is power in numbers. Like the guy that shot his gun right in front of the reporter - had absolutely no fear of the police arresting him. That reporter btw, had some balls, that, or he was extremely naive. As far as I am concerned, Oakland is Detroits little brother. Even Sacramento is getting pretty bad. I was outside my grandmas on Monday near Greenback and there was a driveby 1 block away. I heard the 8 shots and the tires squeel and I could tell it was very close. The area was swarmed with sheriffs in minutes, but that would likely never happen in Oakland. They'd wait until morning and go clean up the mess then.

Thanks for the comments. Definitely help to understand it all. About two years ago I found some flea medicine for my dog on Craigslist from a lady located in Oakland. Got off the 580 and went through a few neighborhoods to her place. It was really nice. Green everywhere, nice trees, no cars parked with flat tires or leaves and spider webs all over em. The houses were simple, small, and sort-of old, maybe built in the 50s. I like those type of neighborhoods. Later I stopped for some lunch at a nice shopping area, then got back on the freeway and left.
