bad sound comming from either rear end or trany
« on: Oct 26, 2010, 07:58:40 AM »
I am not sure if the sound is comming from the rear end or the trany but its one of the two  :headshake:
here is the rundown on whats going on. I drove the truck the other day across the road to a friends house and that is where it made this horrable sound that didnt sound good at all almost like a scream/ shhhshsh sound I stopped the truck and proceded with caution it will not make this noise if I keep it under about 15-20 mph took it back home and putit up then I pulled it to work oneday on a trailer and got to work unloaded it and drove it around the block and it did it again  I shifted into scrond gear and it did it then as well, I didnt put it in third didnt want to rish further damage. ( what ever it is I guess the damage has been done)  :smack: I drove it lastnight just down the street infront of the house and it did it I asked here lastnight in the shoutbox and RescueRunner told me to put the T-cases in netural  and shift the gears I did this and there was no horrible sound. so this leads me to think it only does it when the truck is under some sort of load (wheels moving or tranny turning) any ideas ???
I am going to jack the rear axle up and get the tires off the ground and crank the truck and put it in first gear and see if i can detect exactly where and what it is thats making this deadly sound.   Some one sugested it could be either my pinion flange or the crush sleve or something in the 3rd member. I HAVE A STOCK 4.10 E-LOCKER IN THE REAR   :help:   :turtle: :turtle: :turtle:

Ok, I hate to do this, But. I think the REASON the person said your pinion bearings could be the problem should be posted up.

You have stock 4.10 e-lockers, with crush sleeves. You swapped out your pinion flanges and when you re-installed them, you used an impact wrench to put the nut back on till it was "tight". this means that nobody here has an actual idea of the pinion bearing pre-load on either of your diffs?
Sand, what fun, drop pressure to 12psi, stock tires are still digging, can't afford to get stuck, 8psi, still not working. Find a place to GET OUT, air up, un-lock hubs,  WAIT whats this, hubs are UN-LOCKED already. 2wd, 8psi, stock tires, Oregon sand dunes.

maybe jack the truck up in the rear put it in gear and let er spin....of course put it on jackstands before you crawl around under it while its running lol...  sorry to say it does sound like a bearing...

Hell i have heard a loud screaming noise while driving once and it ended up being a small rock stuck between the brake rotor and the backing plate.... made a hell of a noise, just reversed until stoped...

Those are some huge welds!

UPDATE:

I am getting a new ring and pinion 5.29:1 for the rear and also a new bearing kit as well from MC I am also having a reliable and very trustworth source (drivetrain specialist) person set up my gears he has been doing this for 30 years and has given me a warenty against the product (not the gears) but on the labor he said if you break them thats your fault if it starts to make noises thats mine.

I had to finance the deal with my company (mom and dad) they are gona pay for it and then I will repay them every paycheck until its paid off.

then I will start ALL OVER AGAIN AND DO THE FRONT AXLE :thud:

If you do not have 5:29 gears in the front, do not put it in 4-wheel drive. If you do you will be replaceing the T-cases.
