So I recently got an 89 4runner and can't decide if I want to make it a pre-runner or a rock crawler, can you help me decide? I love both sports but I also want it to be my DD, I know I cant have both........ or can I???? Anyone do a solid axle prerunner or prerunner suspension rock crawler?? Please give me your info.

if you link it front and rear that will allow you to both rock crawl and pre runner but it depends on how much money you want to put into the 4runner

Just make a good all around setup.  Use the really long 3rd gen rear leaf springs up front on a solid axle swap and add air bumps and super high end tunable shocks.  I used the long 3rd gen rear springs on my SAS and it rides and handles really nice on the fast stuff.

Long travel IFS would probably do double duty OK as long as you don't run too much tire and you like changing CV axles every weekend :).

I recently ran with a guy with the same rig.... with a total chaos suspension and some other custom touches..... did the "rock crawling" just fine didnt break anything (3rz) and i have seen him flog it in the dunes and it straight up gets it out there too...... so you can do both but its $$$$

It is going to do be hard to do both well, and expensive.  If you don't have deep pockets, I would suggest building the IFS to wheel better in the rocks, first, it will be cheaper, and still allow you to SAS it if/when you find the needing to do so.

I would set up the Runner the following way, 2" body lift/1.5" ball joint spacers/cut-out fender flares/rear springs(lift, Chevy's, etc.) to clear 35's, dual cases(stock/stock or if $$ allows stock/4.7's), rear ARB, cheap lunch box locker upfront, and 5.29 gears.  This will allow you to keep the comfy highway ride as a DD, blast up and down the fire roads or across the desert in pre-runner comfort, and still be able to run trails like Rubicon or Fordyce w/relative ease, depending on your driving skill that is.

I did some research about 3 link and 4 link suspension and the 3 link strongly recommends full hydro steer and may not work with hysteer.  I don't think I need full hydro, and as 4 link it says Requires replacing or relocating gas tank. Extensive bed modifications or removal of the bed is required for installation. Removing the bed is no big deal but I don't want to relocate anything like the gas tank.

I did some more browsing and found Coyote #797. The only thing I don't like about it is that it's leaf under axle.

Uhh??? that truck is not leaf under axle. You need glasses. All the pictures I found look it its still axle under leaf like it came stock.
