Crossmember is in the stock location, but i have a budbuilt. You will need a shifter for the trans, I used a B&M, some guys like lokar better. Also a transcooler. I am sure there is more, its always the small things

Small things suck lol.

Just a simple shifter will do, yes?

That is the shifter. I used a universal radiator from speedway motors 22" x 19" and a mechanical fan, but I am probably going to swap that out for an electric

I know you've prolly made up your mind. But I say stay Toyota. makes thing easier and cooler. Though all engine swaps are cool.

THK, what state do you live in?

??

Depending on what smog requirements you are subject to, my first choice would be a Turbo diesel 4- or 5-cylinder (however I have NO experience here), or my 2nd choice would be the 3RZ.

I would need to know more about the use of the vehicle. What type of wheeling? How much daily driving? Longest road trip you'd expect to take? How heavy is your truck with the 22R? Will you ever go over 37" size tires? Do you live in a valley, foothills, mountains? Will you do any towing?

I live in a valley of mountain ranges, quite a few passes, hills, etc. It will be 80% DD. I like Rockcrawling, fireroading, snow wheeling. I eventually plan to go to a 40" tire sometime... towing would likely happen yes. and I dont know the weight of the xcablong beds.

the only engine i would consider doing a swap, other than a stock replacement, would be a LS based(4.8,5.3,5.7,6.0) GM with a 4L80. only reason being is i worked in a shop and spent a lot of time on these swaps.  very reliable, easy wiring, easy smog, and not to mention lots of power, and for cheap :eyebrow:

1 tons would be a good idea :yesnod:

I'll pick on this because it is so much fun to do:

While your doing the V8 conversion THK, make sure to add a 1,200 pound Grand Piano for a sound system so you can actually hear your Mozart while going uphill at 80 MPH, then be sure to add a 1,500 pound King Size Water Bed so you can rest and recover from the nose bleed once you get to the top of the mountain, make sure to swap out the Toyota frame with one from a 24,000 pound Class A 3-cylinder Shay Locomotive to make sure your truck doesn't buckle under the weight. Also, you'll need to have a 33-foot diameter wind tunnel fan to keep the engine compartment cool and you will need to mount at least a couple fuel tanks from a Antonov An-225 Mriya airplane somewhere to your rig so you can make it in between gas stations to refill along your way.

I dont have have money to do an engine, gears, axles, etc. and doing a toy engine swap... yeah too much money for the output ill get. I do not want a 4cyl. Im running 4.10s and i want to confidently push 37s+ without a struggle that a 4cyl will have. Ive had enough of those. im not saying im purpose building it on 40s to tow. i tow a utility trailer from time to time and do other heavy loads as well and 4cyls just arent up to the job for me. So going with a 4.3L and 700r4 with a toy tcase will be perfect. toy swaps are just too expensive.

For a daily driver with 40s you'll definitely want to run either a V6 petrol or turbo 4- or 5-cylinder Diesel (equal torque but better fuel mileage).

By the time you run a 4.3L, 40's, I would bump to a D60 for reliability. That way you can keep your foot in it going up the trail and not worry about making it home. Could even throw a supercharger on it. With that combo you are really pushing the Yota drive train.

Even a 4-banger on 40's is pushing it.

If you see it, its for sale.

It would be cheaper just to buy a Chevy Truck.

just my  :twocents: , but i have a 4.8L in a 5200lb truck, and i'm averaging 18mpg on the freeway, not to mention is c-channel frame, vs. the toyota boxed frame.  ls motors are really smooth, if left stock.  i don't see why you would get any more vibes than a stock drivetrain.  aluminum radiator with an electric fan keeps them plenty cool.   :gap:
