That will for sure help.

whats your reasoning on going to V-Belts vs. Serpentine?

I like the serp belt, only have to carry one spare and it goes on really quick

Dunno what you've got as far as junkyards in the area, but once you get to the point of the small things, definitely go wander.

I've saved so much money buying the typical stuff (after market shifters, etc.) at PnP that its not even funny.

I definitely vote for the 4.3, thats what'll be going in mine next.  Fairly straight forward swap, easily accessible and cheap parts, and you'll be pleased with the power.  I've got a buddy with a 4.3 in his toy, it scoots along great on the freeway, and the low end is awesome in the rocks.

Most of the people that I've talked to that have put the 5.7 in a toy have said the effort isn't worth the benefit.  As mentioned above, the toy stuff won't last long if you put your foot into it, and it seems like most of them struggle with cooling issues, due to fitment.

we've got plenty off discount used warehouses, yards and such in the Spokane, WA area (1hr approx from me)
I will definately do some wandering!

I am happy to see all the support with going to a 4.3L, as I feel i will not be disappointed and the aftermarket support and cheap parts will be nice! they are much easier to upgrade and cheaper then a Foreign.

as of now, I have nothing towards a 4.3L, im getting all the information gathered now to make it easier here soon.

If going with a 4.3, do you have to go with an automatic trans? Wont the l52hd hold up to the hp?  What's the pro's and con's about doing that(if it's possible)?
Fuel tank swap, wiring? What about all of that? Does anyone have a build thread from start to finish on a 4.3 swap?

Cost of the adapters, clutch, flywheel, slave cylinder, etc is more than just buying the chevy trans to tcase adapter, plus you get a 700r4 when you buy the motor most the time. The l52hd might have problems holding up, I used a w56 originally and I toasted it. Most guy use a r151 or r 150 if they stay manual since it was designed to be behind a v6. Fuel tank swap is not necessary, I ran an external fuel pump that pulls through the original toy pump that is still in the tank. There are a few complete swaps on yotatech in the domestic engine swap section.

id stay away from the toyota 4cyl trans, personally. lol
and the auto can be mechanically controlled like a manual.
in the long run its cheaper.... keep in mind... its the same block as the 5.7L 350 V8.. so same bolt pattern. so any manual that will bolt to the 5.7L will bolt to the 4.3L. might be a few little tweaks.

Yota tech is where i have found some good tech.

also here is some good ones.

Can you guys with 4.3s post some pics of your engine bay, dash, ecm placement, exhaust routing, trans/tcase mount.

Id like to see where the heater hoses go from and to..... on the firewall, brake booster vac line placement and how you did the PS with the toy box.

I like that idea the best.

Alright so here are some pics of BigArms23's Swap. Thanks Dan!

This is the ODBII port, I believe?

The upper hose goes across the back of the engine and to the right side heater connection?

Which Radiator is that? MC adaptor?

I have had a 3.4 early runner, And have a 4.3  early runner now..  I can't imagine wasting my time with the 3rz myself, Yes it is a jump over stock for sure but a lot of work for not so much of a improvement IMO after driving 6 or 8 of them.. The 3.4 to me is a sweet motor that is smooth and able to go a whole bunch of miles..  the 4.3 is a sweet swap also and just seems like it belongs under the toyota hood.. Seemed like a easier swap over all to me.. it sure is nice always having the power on the hills on the way to the trail

I had a 1st gen given to me with a buick 215 all aluminum V8.  The swap was kind of funky fabed up since there is no adapter available, but the guy made it go right on the stock 4 speed.  It was light, had good power but no too much and even got decent milage for a circa 1962 V8.  It even had an HEI distributor swaped over from from a cadillac, I think. I sold the truck to a buddy and he broke the trans and sold it to another guy.  The engine is still at our other buddy's scrap yard.  I wouldn't mind trying that again.

However... I have a facination with puting an old 18RG in my 1st gen.  Not many of those engines around though and the 3RZ is better overall with efi but it would be an old school cool 140 horse 4 banger...

When I used to be into the 18rg's and 2tg's 20 + years ago in the celicas and corrolas my friend  had a fuel injected 18rgeu in hi 85 extra cab.. He adapted the 22re engine control and with the 18rgeu's intake, injectors and such.. it ran great but since it was using the 22re computer once it would start to really breath it would hit rev limiter..  He never figured how to change the rev limit in the computer and it was kinda a wash to me..  The cool factor was way up there, it ran awesome but needed to be able to rev more

I had a lot of time and Money into a few 18rg motors as well as the 2tg/3tg builds..  Had a few Extremely fast 4 bangers..  Was a ton of fun and have been keeping my eye open for one again.. It got hard to keep working with them when the after market support for these motors started to dry up

As long as the shift points are the same for both, I don't see why not.  I used a BM UniMatic shifter, which is just about the cheapest they make and  comes with a P/N switch.

Here is a pic early in the swap, I'll take some pics of how it looks now (now that my photobucket is repaired)

You need one of these in Californika (Go Dan Go)
