That will for sure help.whats your reasoning on going to V-Belts vs. Serpentine?
Dunno what you've got as far as junkyards in the area, but once you get to the point of the small things, definitely go wander. I've saved so much money buying the typical stuff (after market shifters, etc.) at PnP that its not even funny. I definitely vote for the 4.3, thats what'll be going in mine next. Fairly straight forward swap, easily accessible and cheap parts, and you'll be pleased with the power. I've got a buddy with a 4.3 in his toy, it scoots along great on the freeway, and the low end is awesome in the rocks. Most of the people that I've talked to that have put the 5.7 in a toy have said the effort isn't worth the benefit. As mentioned above, the toy stuff won't last long if you put your foot into it, and it seems like most of them struggle with cooling issues, due to fitment.
If going with a 4.3, do you have to go with an automatic trans? Wont the l52hd hold up to the hp? What's the pro's and con's about doing that(if it's possible)? Fuel tank swap, wiring? What about all of that? Does anyone have a build thread from start to finish on a 4.3 swap?
Thanks Bigarms! Thats what I was thinking or under radio on the tranny hump.
i would try to keep in high and dry.
the reason i choose the glove box area is when i wheel i generally keep the doors on and most of my wiring is behind the dash
I had a 1st gen given to me with a buick 215 all aluminum V8. The swap was kind of funky fabed up since there is no adapter available, but the guy made it go right on the stock 4 speed. It was light, had good power but no too much and even got decent milage for a circa 1962 V8. It even had an HEI distributor swaped over from from a cadillac, I think. I sold the truck to a buddy and he broke the trans and sold it to another guy. The engine is still at our other buddy's scrap yard. I wouldn't mind trying that again.However... I have a facination with puting an old 18RG in my 1st gen. Not many of those engines around though and the 3RZ is better overall with efi but it would be an old school cool 140 horse 4 banger...
I have had a 3.4 early runner, And have a 4.3 early runner now.. I can't imagine wasting my time with the 3rz myself, Yes it is a jump over stock for sure but a lot of work for not so much of a improvement IMO after driving 6 or 8 of them.. The 3.4 to me is a sweet motor that is smooth and able to go a whole bunch of miles.. the 4.3 is a sweet swap also and just seems like it belongs under the toyota hood.. Seemed like a easier swap over all to me.. it sure is nice always having the power on the hills on the way to the trail
I just realized I made my 1,000th post in this thread a while back!
Cheers got any pics?Im looking for engine bay, dash, trans hump, tcase mount, and exhaust routing pics
