Let the fun start.
After gutting the engine bay of everything I started to get rid of wires that go nowhere. (carb/efi computer)
On the drivers side I had 8 wires left.

Two wires that go to the brake fluid sensor(grn/wht. wht/blk.)
Two wires to the ignition coil (blk/red/org. blk.)
Four wires to the altenator (wht8g. wht10g. yel. red.)
I will run grounds later.

The rest, I unrapped the harness a foot or 2 back towards the cab and cut them off. Then rerapped the wires with electrical tape.

Alternator
Pre 85 pickups/4runners were externalualy reulated. the 4 wires going into the main harness are:

Red wire: "ignition on" 12V power – 12V when the ignition s/w is activated, fused at   10A – don't give this constant power

Small white wire: 12V battery power, direct connection to battery + terminal, fused at 7.5-10A.

Yellow wire: ground signal for "charge warning lamp".  This provides a ground signal for a lamp in case of alternator failure.

Large white cable: main alternator cable.  This should be connected to the battery + terminal with an 80-100A fuse or fusible link in between.

For the 4.3l's chevy alternator

B+ Big blk/red wire.

F= field pnk/blk wire.

L= brn wire.

4.3l to toyota harness:
B+ Big blk/red wire gose to Whites.

F= field pnk/blk wire gose to red.

L= brn wire gose to yellow.

werty

my motivation is to make this porject as cheap as posible. I'm out a $100 on the blazer after i sold the toyota drivetrain for $700.

$500 on the new AA adapter $140 for the downey vss adapter
$90 for the fuel pump
$830 total so far

motor mounts, radiator, tranny mounts, exaust, drive lines still to go.

I'm hoping to get this done for under $2000

COToy91

I definatly got my engine for $200 out of an asstro van and then the rest of my cost was the Howell wiring and computer

The transmision is a 91 or newer th700r4 it says it was rebuilt in 2005. my truck is 3200lbs so the 5500lbs its used to, should up the gas milage. I found out that i can use a set of 350 headers and cut off the back one on each side.

I just scored a 700r4 rebuilt with the AA transfer case adapter already installed for $650. Is the VSS needed to run this trans? I thought all you needed to do was install the TV cable correctly and hook up the proper wiring for the lock out and you are golden?

look at post 15.

The VSS is a signal off the transfercase that sends 4000 to 5000 pulses per mile. Once the computer see's 4000+ pulses sence's that its in 3rd or 4th it locks up the T.C.
That what I see happening with the wiring diagrams anyway. do the little mod in post 15 and dont worry about the vss if you dont care for spending the $140 to get one from downey.

werty

o and i am going to mess with a vss of a toyota like the one marlin sells and see if i can make it 2 pin(chevy) instead of 3 pin(toyota)

COToy91

Hm well i know that you can buy a full lock up wiring kit from jegs or summit for $75, but interesting. I have a conversion bell housing for sale along with all the associated parts if you might still need them,  here is the link

#25
The main reason I'm doing this swap is my left knee and leg is bad its hurts to walk and after an hour or two of pushing in the clutch on a trail. It likes to not work any more. I have 14 screws and two plates holding the tibia together at the knee. so I'm using the auto. I edited post 15 for the lock up kit ColoradoToy91 told me about.

COToy91

Where on the transfer case does the VSS install? I am the second owner of my truck so i did not do the swap my self. I plane to swap in the 700r4 that i have now so my questions are about that and the speedometer, Will the stock speedo in the T-case still work but just be off by MPH or can you adapt the cable to the 700r4 and install the proper gears in the trans? For the VSS I know I have one because it is needed for the TBI injection but i have no clue where it would be located, also if anything needs to be done with that for the 700r4 swap?

Thanks
Ryan

get me a pic of your speedometer cable where it plugs into the tcase the vss should be plugged into the cable at the tcase.

COToy91

I am pulling transmission and T-case tomorrow and i will take  few pics then. I believe the Downey unit is the one on there but then again since i have bought this truck three years ago i spent 80% of the time fixing wiring problems. Ill post those pics on Sat. night or Sun.

Thanks
