You pay for the steel, and labor no matter who makes it. It costs more because you get quality metal, design and welding. Look at the app, its a 4 runner. One single tubing(yes there is a small tube first but just flat bar connecting them) with that big of a span will not stand up to much of a impact.
Dr.Maxwe001 – well i have a 15 gal compressor now and if I gett he 60  and then use the 15 as a reserve that wil give me 75 gal  thats close to 80 isnt it ?

crazykooter

I was bsing about this post while we were hanging out at the springs and for the most part everyone I talked to bout it agreed with me and that this isnt a defect or a design flaw.  The bumper is just not ment to take that sort of impact.  Let alone without being there to see how hard it actually hit.  I would be willing to bet you take any manufactures 1 1/2" .120 wall tube bumpers and subject them to the same impact they will collapse as well.  The only way to prevent that would be to (as said earlier) run 2 more tubes to the rear bar or better, triangulate to the frame.
Ive seen Marlins bumpers take some HUGE downward hits and the side and middle without any issues.  Thats a piercing blow which is just brutal to steel.

IronClad

I disagree with it not being a design flaw. If you had simple gussets just like this it would not have bent like that. The outer tube maybe but the inner? doubtful. atleast to not that extent..

Maybe not quite to the center with the bars but close.. but pardon my 10 second paint skills

Was reversing on the trail, slid back and hit my rear bumper and didn't think anything of it as I've hit it harder than that before. Then, I get to camp and find this

Frame rails are not bent at all...

I could not believe this when I saw it, I have hit this bumper alot harder than this past wkend and no problems whatsoever. there must have been a defect in the metal or something, that's the only thing I can think of.

Looking at these images I don't think a gusset would have done much, notice that it was a perfect hit right at the edge of the gusset in the center. If it would have been even an inch more to center then yes not only would the gussets you made would have helped but the gusset that connects the 2 cross bars would have stopped it from collapsing. If it were plated from end to end then the combined strength of both may have kept that from happening. You just hit the weak link in the gusset.

I understand what you are saying and on a bumper I had we did the same as you are thinking but the gusset that has the MC logo is what caused the inner tube to bend. If that gusset ran end to end thus becoming a plate across the entire back it probably would not have bent at all. The "truss" that you want may have not prevented this.

Bumpers are just a way to save the body of your truck in case of an impact, looks like it did a good job of that to me. Just think what your truck would have looked like without it.

Dude this freakin guy hit something or got hit WAY harder than any bumper would ever be able to take.  I call BS on the story and say the dude doesnt know how to drive if he backed into something that hard.  Marlin has no reason to take any of the blame. I work at Demello Off-Road and know for a fact that somthing like that would have to have been hit HARD.  You dont just bend steel like that by backing into somthing without knowing you backed into it WAY to hard.....

i dont understand why the main tube isnt .188 wall tubing. it would only add a couple pounds and make it twice as strong. doesnt make sence to me

LOL for sure I didnt work there when that was built... but I didnt mean it to sound that way anyway.

We build ALOT of sliders most of what we sell are sliders, we are a small shop with about 6 total working and dont do much custom stuff.  but like I said we build alot of sliders and rear tube bumers as well and by building and being around them so much I know how easy/hard it would be to bend a bumper like that.
The only way that could of happend is if there was a bend there before maybe from somthing previous or for some odd reason there was a "bad" spot in the tubing in that exact spot.
I will say that our rear taco bumpers would NOT have bent like that and if so it would of F U C Ked the whole ass end of the truck up as well.

P-DiseToy24

For sure didnt mean it to sound like im the :pokinit: or anything even close to that...

I'll be the first one to say we arent a shop for custom work and some of the stuff we sell isnt the greatest..... but whos is!

I'm down dude! I have hit my sliders on my truck so hard it jars your whole body and ya swear they are coming through the floor and they look no where close to that bumper. They just have some nice dents in them!! Only way i could see this happening is if there was a nice size dent there to start with!! I've seen buggy's hit dom links on some gnar rocks throttle down and nothing like this has come of it! Ive also never heard of a bad area in tube!! But wat is done is done and it saved the truck like it is suppose to do, so buy a new one or fix that one and plate it up a bit and go wheeling and do it again!! The purpose of the bumper was so when your backing up and can't see nor hear it will save yo ride and that purpose was served very well!! good job marlin and great work at saving this guys rear!! HA HA  :hahaha:

Looks like a friggin boat, WOW.  And to the original thread, either by *slip* you mean your foot slipped and the throttle hit the floor, or that has got to be a defect in the tubing, What happened! :yikes:

You had to hit F * I N G HARD!!!!!!! How FAST were you going in REVERSE to bash that in like that? I've been in a few nasty accidents and you must have been HAULIN ASS (in reverse) to do that.... Marlin holds no responsibility for peoples "accidents"...... maybe you should build yourself some 4''x4'' SOLID tube bumpers to prevent bendage next time?
