LOUD NOISES!!!!!

WHAT ARE WE YELLING ABOUT...........  :yikes:  :blah:

BigMike

Entering this thread late, I am gonna side with crazykooter, not that larger tires are or are not more damaging, but rather that larger tires make it more difficult for rigs with small shoes to get through trails they used to wheel without trouble.

This of course however, is a huge can of worms, because as mentioned, mother nature plays a huge role in this, with many, many other supporting factors.

We had a thread here a couple years back where an older member said some insulting words against us "younger crowd with big tires" because he was getting tired of having to stack rocks. There was also talk about how it is illegal to displace rocks in a National Forest.

Basically, I do feel there are many times where I wished I was challenged again, and for me, I would MUCH rather revert back to smaller tires than to find more difficult terrain. At the same time however, I wouldn't want to loose the nice, smooth ride of my 37" tires at 3 psi. So the compromise is to keep my 37s and try to just enjoy getting out of the city, enjoy nature, get out and hike to the lakes, go fishing, chat at the camp fire, listen to the wind blowing through the trees.... I think it's about getting back to the roots of four wheeling: Going to remote places to get away from the city and to enjoy nature. NOT to look for the biggest rock and to see how many times we can "GET IT" and break our trucks. That isn't how wheeling started and that is not wheeling in my opinion. This is what the newer reckless crowd lacks in my opinion. :twocents:

You can go out and enjoy nature and eat granola in a prius...  No need for 4 wheel drive at all if that's all you want to do.  Some of us do go wheeling in order to "get it" on big rocks as well as to cruise the trails.  No we don't need to have the big dumb tires for the trails but when you get to the rocks up here you simply can not do the hardest/most fun lines on anything smaller than 37's period.  Yes you can play on the smaller sections but you won't be able to do the "good" stuff. ;)
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

Ghettofab88

Part of the issue is the rockracing trend.  It makes for good competition, but does nothing to help preserve the trails.  I see people wanting to emulate that on the trails and it just doesn't belong.

The terrain we drive on is by its very nature extremly dynamic, so simply saying that tire size is the culprit is a bit too specific.  I could just as easily say its a wheelbase problem or a width or weight issue.

The real errosion issue is the fact that we have more people than ever out there enjoying the trails.  Just creeping through the trails will break up the soil between the rocks causing it too erode more with each rain/snow shower.  It doesn't matter what size the tires are or vehicle for that matter.

See the thing is I really dont consider 37s big tires anymore.  They do have the same foot print as a 35 but aired down they give you that extra inch to clear your axles.  I guess when I ment big tires in my title I was referring to 40's and bigger.  I see 44+ on the trail a lot more every year which is just insane imo.  There is great wheeling spots like hammers were those tires are recommended but imo they just dont belong on the sierra trails.  If everyone who went out on the trail would follow the tread lightly slogan then I really wouldnt have an issue what so ever.
Hope I didnt come off as a tree huger,  I am far from it.  I believe there is a middle road which will appease a lot of the people out there.  Of course there will always be the ones that will never be happy.  Lets just have fun on these amazing trails we have here in cali.  If you want to hardcore rock crawl they have a great competition for that.  Calrocs is all yours.  :beerchug:
I will be seeing you guys in sept.   :usa:

TURBO has a funny-but-true saying for this. We don't have much $$ for tires, so we have both decided that instead of saving up for some 39"s or 42"s, we should just start saving up for 66" tires because by the time we can afford them, everyone will be wheeling them.

These opinions will always stir the pot because people are different and have different preferences, but I totally agree -- in my own preference -- that 40+ tires have NO PLACE in the Nevadas.

I run 46"s
had 47's on it when I pulled your ass off the rocks in the DARK on the con & I didn't even know you..............you were not complaing or whinning about my tires then!
you had those 31s on there chewing up the trail getting stuck mire then anyone else, you did the damage that weekend  I SAW IT :shocking: I think guys like you, running the trail by themselves with 31s unprepared, no winch don't belong on the trail :smack: :smack: :smack: :rofl2:

I guess this is sort of a rant but I was talking to a buddy bout a week ago and we were discussing how the trails are getting chewed up bad by the large tires people keeping running.  Dont get me wrong there is some places which really need larger tires like the hammers.  The main complaint we have is trails such as the con, fordyce and high lakes.  These trails use to be perfect for 35"s.  Now its getting to the point were 35"s are just to small.  If we really want to cont. to have these trails in the future we as a 4 wheeling community need to take responsibility for the erosion of the trails.  Larger tires eat away at the trail much faster.  I suppose I may be a minority on this but I felt like I should post something about it.  Big tires have their place but imo its not on the beautiful trails we want to have around for years to come.

try having a d60 & 14 bolt with small tires, brings the suck, like running 31s on a toy axle :reg: :puke:

That would most definitely blow chunks.

My truck is somewhere around 3600 lbs and I know it would perform a LOT better off road if it was 2600 lbs with much smaller axles and a 80 HP engine. Every time I see a Daihatsu Rocky build I get so antsy to build one. So now you understand my minimalist nature :)

mine weighs.............7,500 lbs...yup it's a piggy!
But with 46s I do not tear up the trail, I have much respect!

every rig is different, just need to look at what the rig is to see what tire it needs
wish I had room for the 54" TTC claws, I could have had those free when I went to TTC, but I do street drive & do not have rockwells.

I couldn't see a rockwell rig on 40"s, lol

This Is a buddy of mine named Colby, in this video he walked soup kitchen. He is running 49s I think they might be bigger. He doesn't spin a tire nor rub the diff on anything. In fact i dont think ive sceen him spin a tire the whole trip while walking every tech section in the con. I'm running 37s and when I do soup bowl I spin alittle and I have to give it a bump. Most people I wheel with are running 22re's and have 40+ tires and I can spin my 37's a hella lot Easyer then my friends with 42's. I'm just not convinced that big tires are an issue

Funny cus when I had 105" wheelbase, toy axles, 35", 37" and 38.5" tires I would walk it every time with no issues at all. Now I have one tons 39.5" IROKs and 112.5" wheelbase I cannot make soup bowl either. I don't even try it anymore, I just roll up to Soup Kitchen and look "cooler" hahaha Little does everybody there know that I can't make soup bowl anymore. lol

I could easily justify having like 3 or 4 trucks with varying degrees of build and tire size...  You could whip out whatever truck you wanted for whatever trail and feel challenged or walk over everything depending on what you wanted that day.

It seems like there is increasingly more division amongst us. If its not Jeep vs Toyota its 32s vs 42s. We have to realize.... our enemy doesn't care what we drive or what size tire we have. They only care about keeping us ALL off of the trail. To them, a lifted 4x4 is just a plant killing, wildlife scaring, loud, global warming causing SUV. So ultimately, we are all in the same boat. We are all losing trails and freedoms equally, so instead of nitpicking about keeping (xxxx) off the trail, we should all just focus on how we can all stay ON the trail.
