smog is not that big of a deal if the truck runs well. Is it a toyota? If it is you should be able to get anything you need to make it pass for cheap and they are not hard vehicles to smog. You can get a transporting permit from DMV and you should be good. You can get one from here or there. I hope this helps. Just call the DMV. I have done this many times. My last one I drove from Utah to San Diego.

get insurance and a pink slip make an appointment at the dmv to have them inspect it than do a pre smog to make sure it will pass ca smog than its a matter of putting it your name and getting ca plates btw whats the potential vehicle

Under the hood there is a sticker, it should say Cal emissions. Even if it doesn't you may be better off since you will be graded at the higher Federal level. By law you must register it within 15 days of bringing it in to CA. I never do as long as the reg is current from the other state. Always and I mean always pre-test when smogging any vehicle. It will save you from being a gross polluter if your vehicle has an issue.

and i have to get it to pass smog before i can go get it registered in cali and get cali plates correct?

My question is...once you've made it out of Cali, why would you go back?

you cannot get plates until it passes, but you can get a tempory red tag that would allow you to drive it to get it smogged. If the out of state reg is valid you would not have to do this since you do have valid reg from that state, but you still need to get the smogging done, it is then electronically sent to the DMV and then you just need to go to the DMV. If you have AAA you can also do it there.

Oh one more thing, I think you may be required to have the VIN verified too.

Might have been said already :dunno: but make sure it's EITHER Cali Emissions OR Federal Emissions. If it's NV Emissions most likely you can't register it in CA. I've gone through the same thing - buying in NV and registering in CA. But the car I got was FEDERAL Emissions, not NV.  :twocents:

Because i dont really have the time to go sit in line and ask them. So i was just seeing if anyone here had done this before and know's what i had to do.

Pat

if it is not ca emissions it is a federal emissions car, that is where the term "49 state" comes from,  You will not get plates as stated till it is smogged and registered in your name but as stated they will give you a temp permit till you have the smog done. And as stated by rocksurfer it will have to have a vin verification done but is no big deal, just take it with you to register it and the DMV worker will verify.. I bought 2 rigs from nevada in the last year and it was very painless.  Both times I asked the guy I was buying it from to let me use the plates to get it home and I sent them back as soon as I got home.. A third a few years back I just towed it back so that one does not count"D

My biggest thing to reccomend is make sure it has all the original engine stuff on it..  In Reno and vegas they have smog so most of the time it is not a issue, but if outside the city limits they don't have to smog and guys get creative with emissions stuff

It is in a non smog county right know but it came from reno this year were it was smogged, and it says this vehicle passes all safety requirements on a federal level on this date. does this mean its federal emmisions car? Im unsure because my 95 ex cab says this same thing?

Pat

you have nothing to worry about if federal or ca, makes no difference bringing one in..  As long as it is equipped with all original smog equipment..  Just a fyi..  Nevada smog inspection is a little less restrictive.. you can have headers and such as long as the tailpipe is clean..  Just get underhood pics and make sure it is stock
