Hello everyone!  I'm Sean, been on yotatech for a while, but decided to join up here.  The more contacts the better.  Well, on to me, I'm 28 (on the 19th), love to go wheeling with my fiance, shooting, working on my truck, and love to BBQ.  I have been into Toyota's for dang near my whole life, my dad has owned one since 1990, bought it new, just this last year he had just dropped off his patrol car, was on his way home and then slammed from the rear by a drunk, the bed was a loss, I bought it off him wheeled it for a while, then sold it for a more economical car.  Before and after that I have owned many a Toyota, seventeen to count (i get bored with my trucks), but alas, I found the truck of my dreams.  My new rig is an 84 4Runner, 5 speed, 22R, SR5, 5-inch lift, 32" M/T's, '08 Taco seats, no-name bumpers, and a loose nut behind the wheel!  Well, I look forward to talking to y'all.

Where do I start?  I bought the truck with a first gear/second gear issue.  It would always pop out of first while releasing the clutch to move.  If you hold it in, be prepared, it will shoot out of first, second would pop out only when downshifting.  Well, I got a new (used) transmission that our local fab shop had laying around, he thought it was a good transmission.  Got the new one in yesterday and all gears exept first are great, with positive engagement.  Still the same issue as the original transmission.  I checked the clutch while in there, material is great, not alot of wear on any part of the clutch.  The release bearing was also free spinning with a little resistance, and no maring or damage.  I do have a leaky clutch master and slave, but just bought new ones today, so getting them on in the morning.  Other than that i'm at a loss.

hmm sounds kinda similar to mine right now. i have to hold my shifter down when in second gear if i'm at low rpms. if i'm driving in second it is fine. when i let off the gas it pops out into neutral. i have no idea what causes this. i will check in on your thread though i'm sure someone will have an answer or two. good luck with yours.

sorry if I am slow to respond, i've been under this truck constantly trying to get everything right that the last idiot screwed up.   For gods sake, when I picked her up, I had to re-torque the axle u-bolts, you would steer and the whole axle moved!  I just got through with a front axle rebuild, took me 6 hours, after doing mine, it took me 15 minutes to tear down my buddy's, go figure.  On the second trans now, getting ready to get a third.  Steering has recently started creaking and popping.  Its a battle i'm trying my hardest to win, i love this truck too much to ditch it.

UPDATE:  Picked up a buddy's third today at the local fab shop, talked to him some more, ended up completely disassembling the tranny, first gear fork was toast, plus a couple of gears were screwed up.  Picking up the new tranny from him on next saturday, lets hope it works!

Thanks again for the welcome guys!  Well, got the new tranny in today, went ahead and got the clutch, it was late, we were tired, and forgot something, the breaker bar on the crank pulley, went to starter her up and spun the bolt right out.  So, question 2, what is the torque spec for that bolt and how do you keep it from turning over the engine when you torque it?  We tried it in 4 low, in gear, brakes applied, but still turns the crank, how do you hold her in place?
