Newby from Texas checking in
« on: Mar 10, 2010, 11:47:12 AM »
Building my first Toyota.  Picked up a 69 FJ 40 that someone had done a horrible job on a v8 conversion with no transfer so it was RWD only as well as all kinds of jimmy rigging but I picked it up for 1K with very little rust so no complaints.  So I stripped down the entire drive train, built a fresh 350, chevy 4 speed and transfer., spring over with old man emu springs, reverse shackle kit.  When I am back home from working in Iraq I will replace the original front axle with a newer toyota with disc brakes and upgrade the diffs and gears.  wire up the electrical, get drive shafts made and start adding power steering.  the rest will come as I get to it.  Main focus is to get it rolling and customize it as I see fit.  I'll get some pics and keep y'all posted when I get home next week.
Thanks for looking,
Phillip

Anyone have a good source for new gas tanks that don't cost a fortune and have decent capacities?

Been back over seas for a few weeks.  Due to be home after the 22nd   :usa:  Should have diff's and gears waiting on me.  Plus already lined up parts from a 82 axle to convert front axle to disk while rebuilding.  I've had plenty of time to brainstorm about my rig since there's not much else to do here.  All I have left to do is rebuild the axles.  Have custom drive shafts made.  Wire up ignition, accessories.  build a bracket and shifter for my transfer case.  Find a throttle cable short enough to work......  Then the FJ will be able to run... of course more stuff will be added as I go but the main goal is to let it drive out of the garage and breath in some fresh air and taste some sweet mud

So, you guys will hear more from me in a couple weeks and when I am cought up, I will give more details and pics to the mods.
