Rancid Smell in 4wd
« on: Nov 28, 2004, 07:50:26 PM »
Ok, ive got a weird problem... When I am in 4 low and I press on the gas, there is a very very bad smell that comes inside the cab and can even smell it 10+ feet away from the truck. Its only when im in 4 low though. When I am in 4 high it doesnt do it but it smells even worse when I switch gears in 4 low. Its so bad that I have to stop and get out sometimes. You guys have any idea what it might be? My friend said that it could be my clutch going out...but it is also pretty new. I need it fixed...

gear oil smells pretty rank. dont know why it would only smell in 4 whell low though. doesnt make much sence. maybe its because your going a lot slower so you can smell it eaiser   :-\\

Is it occuring only in 4low or also in 4high? Or could it be that since in 4low your vehicles speed is slower so the smell is able to "stay" with the vehicle - so in 4high you dont smell it as much?

It won't be your clutch because thats working just the same as in high or low ranges, 2WD or 4WD. The only thing is if you are using 40" tires with 3.90:1 diff gearing and are slipping your clutch everywhere you go in low range because your first gear idles at over 6 mph :ack:

I was thinking about your driveline. Are the splines or the yokes over-greased and once you use 4WD it throws grease all over the place including your exhaust pipe and then it burns off......

I think you guys solved the problem! There is a little leak of gear oil comin out of the tcase and it throws it on the driveline. It was smelling so bad that my dad had to get out and ride with my brother..it was kinda comical by then. Since we narrowed down that, how do i fix the leak? Couple people told me its like a 2 dollar gasket that goes there but is it simple?

Yes it only does it in 4 low for some reason. Even when i am going slow in 4 high i dont smell it. Its very weird.

Hopefully it is just the front output 4-bolt housing.

check fill plug and output flange. your seals could have gone bad in there. i tell you one thing though... you think gear oil smells bad... try burnt gear oil  :reg:

It smells like a mix of dead skunk, rotting cat on the side of the road and rotten eggs. I took a look at the muffler and there is oil stains all over it. So I am guessing that it is gear oil flying all over the place.

Yes it is leaking right out of the driveline flange i guess. Its right where the rear driveline comes out and everytime I go outside and look at it, there is a little oildrop coming off of it.
