83 Bent axle housing.....
« on: Nov 26, 2004, 08:02:13 PM »
New kid on the board just aquired a new axle for his truck cause his front axle is bent right after the truss. the tire has really bad camber so we assumed it to be the alignment.   When i dissassembled the axle with him we couldnt get the longside inner axle shaft to come out with the birfield... any suggestions....  :dunno:   :dunno:   :dunno:   We are completely clueless as to how in the hell we are gonna get this axle out.....

Sometimes they can be stubburn to come out.  Make sure the flat spots on the birf line up top to bottom on the ball part of the tube.  Did you try taking the top steering arm and the bottom plate off of the nuckle?  Other then that i would just yank the crap out of it.

Ive had to resort to using a slide hammer to get the birf's out of housings before.  If its bent that bad and the housing is basically junk, Id grind the factory welds off of the top of the bell area and bend it down so it will come out.
Full hydro, 186:1 with an auto and 44's what could go wrong??

your saying the axle tube is bent between the spring perch and bell??

drop your steering arm and bottom cap and then just yank hard,  if the birf comes off,  get a slide hammer

it must be binding on the seal area,   put a jack under the end of tube next to the bell,  then smack the piss out of the top of the bell a few times  if that doesnt work cut the bell off

i had the same damn problem in my truck. bent housing and culdnt get the longside out. after about 5 guys trying to pull it out and a slide hammer... it decide to just pop out sending me flying into another truck... lol good luck dude. what i found to work best, is i took all the nuts off the 3rd to give me some more wiggle power to get that longside out. just wiggle and shake.... and pull
