Rear axle housing bent?
« on: Feb 19, 2007, 10:55:27 AM »
i have a 92 complete rear axle I was going to swap onto my truck.  The truck it cam off of was wrecked.  The housing took a good thump from a tree stump.  It looks straight and there isn't any wobble when the tires are spun.  There dosent seem to be much play in the diff either.  is there any way to tell if the housing is or is not bent for sure before i swap it on my truck?

You could pull the 3rd then reinstall the axles and see if the axles are square to each other and the housing.

Unbolt the 4 nuts that hold the axle/brake drums on, the axle/drums should slide out and back in pretty easily. If the rear is bent it will be extremely hard to slide out of the carrier because of all the tension and it is nearly impossible to get back in because once the splines line up the 4 studs at the end won't.

Okay.  I'll try that and see what happens.  I would just like to know for sure before I do the swap and have problems with it.  Thanks.
