Best Engine Swap
« on: Nov 19, 2004, 09:32:19 PM »
Well guys...i took a search and found some stuff but not exactly what i want to know...

Well when the time comes that my 22r dies, i want to put a new engine in. I dont care about the work too much but i wanted to know what the best engine swap (or even the same of a brand new engine) would be. Heres what i do.... It would be my DD, want semi-good gas milage if it is possible, i only get 11mpg with my 22r as it is  , NEED IT TO PASS SMOG LEGALLY, thats a big one there, I would like it to be on the cheaper side somewhat. Kinda want some power so i can go up to the hills faster then 40, but that doesnt matter how fast/slow i go. I would like to keep the same axles for now so it couldint be something like a BBC 502 ramjet (dont know if its been done or not). Hopefully this might be enough info to maybe get you guys to know what i do and maybe itll help you out in figuring what kind of engine would be good for me. Im sure some of you guys are going, ahh another lame question...but i just would like to know for my own good. Like usual, any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

RIP Kyota.... you are the man

Like what BigMike did right? I was looking at that and I am liking that the most right now. I also read his build up and it didnt seem too hard, but then again he knew what he was doing

I got 20.4 MPG on my last tank which included play at the Fig Orchard.

After I replace a 22RE in an '86 runner, Im going to start on converting Marlin's truck to a 3RZ. I will start another project thread for his.

Also some local friends came by the shop on Friday and I showed them my conversion and he is going to buy a 3RZ setup next week and start it.

In my opinion, if you want to get great gas mileage, stay light, have great power, be smog legal, and stay Toyota, then its the 3RZ all the way.

Thanks BigMike. I somewhat looked at your build up thread but i was just curious about the total cost of what you did to get it running and about how long it took you to do it. I might just put a new one in this summer since i have school break so that would kill some time and when i go back to school id have a nice fresh engine.

Thanks

why w59?  you can't run a gear case with it, at least without an adapter.  just use a w56 behind it.

i like buick v6 motors though a lot of people here don't, lighter than a 4.3, shorter and front distributor

BigMikes had to be pretty cheap. He's a college student with next to no money. That's about as tight of a budget as it gets.

I should have specified that you need the w59 bellhousing cause the starter and stuff is on the drivers side on the 3RZ and the w59 bellhousing is a direct fit onto the w56

mine came over a long period of time buying parts here and there, as they added together and complemented each other,  the hybrid became a real power monster.  i kept costs down by having a friend with a machine shop

now that,  i dont know, probably not those ,  they are pretty much race engines,  powerful as hell, but mine idled like a race truck,  reall rough,  kinda sounded like a healthy 350 chevy,

a buddy of mine tried to keep up with me once in his f150 with V8 and a 12ft flatbottom boat but he couldnt hang

you would probably be better off with the 3rz, like bigmike, since you need the smog

All depends on what your goals are....

Lots-o-power?  3.4/SC/Gadget fuel system w/ an R-151 tranny.  Capable of 300HP.
Mileage?  Rebuilt 22re with EB components
Somewherein the middle?  3RZ.

Once the 3.0 blows an HG in my 4Runner, an S/C'd 3.4 will go in it's place.

I'd personally skip the 3.8 Buick and the 4.3 Chevy - I've owned both and neither run like a Toyota.

if ya want good mileage, id go with a 2lt. its a 4cylinder turbo toyota diesel engine that basically bolts into any 20r/22re rig.. im running a non turbo 2l engine and love it.tons of low end power.  i get 30 mpg with 33"s and 4:88s.  plus you can run it on straight used vegetable oil (free) and when gas prices get to $5.00 gal. :shudder:  we'll be the only ones wheelin'  :beerchug:  if you want more info check out
www.toyotadieselmadness.com. prices are around 1,200- 1,800 for an already imported one with 40,000 miles from japan. and smog is exempt forever after also!

fritz, are you sure about that vegy oil diesel(bio-diesel) thing?  I thought you had to add methanol and something else before you could run it,  Nate

adding lye or methanol with heat makes biodiesel. you can run biodiesel in any diesel without any modifications. just put it in the tank and go. there are even gas stations all over the west coast that have it in pumps.   straight vegge oil (svo) requires an additional tank. you have to warm the rig up on diesel(or biodiesel) then switch to vegge oil and run it on diesel for 5 min. before shutting it off to clear the fuel lines and injectors. filtered used vegge oil also must be heated (tank, filter, fuel lines) to run in cold temps(below 45) i havn't had much expirience with svo but i know theres canadians who run it year round.
