3.0 Engine Swap
« on: Mar 27, 2006, 09:22:28 AM »
I read about he engine swap in the tech page but it doesn't have any real info on the swap. I have a 95 4Runner 3.0  and want to run either a 302 or a 351W. I have a lot of ford parts and the engines come easy to me so that is what I want to use. Has anyone out there used a 302 or a 351W for a swap and what year of engine. AND suggestion on either to bolt in a C4 Auto (if it will, I think it will since it is smaller than the C6 yet almost as strong) or keep the stock Toyota 5SPD. Oh and the 302 would probably be made into a 347 Stroker :driving:. Any input would help. I know it will need a body lift on top of my 4inch IFS Lift ( currently begging the wife for a SAS and about 33% there :bull crap:) and probably some hood modifications. Just tired of no power and I am swapping in some Yukon 4.11's to help witht he no power issue but like the old man says you can't ever have too much power!
Wifey rolled my 4Runner so now I get to build it the way I want.

I would use a 327, there nice and snappy, and have a wealth in the aftermarket side
'99 SR5/TRD Tacoma w/5vzfe. SAS'd with 64" diamond axle (w/ long superset & ARB). about 5" of lift, 305/75 x16 BFG KM1's. Soon to come: 1.5" more lift (6.5"), 35 to 37" tire, undecided at this point., 63" F/F diamond rear, Marlin 4.7 tacobox.

id run the 302 and wouldn't bother doing the 347 stoker, there a joke. nice thing about the ford is there narrower than the chevy and the distributer is up front. your going to need a 2" body to clear it though. i would suggest running a ford tranny as you will destroy a W series yota tranny. if you run the auto tranny your definetly going to want to run a cable shifter setuo as things get tight in there. i hope if your spending the time with the 302 its at least fuel injected?

Thanks for the input, I plan on running a carb'ed up 302 and I don't live in Cali. The 327 is a possibility but right now I have a 302 from a old cougar and a 351W out of a 81 F-150. Carbs are what I know and know pretty well but fuel injected would be nice but it is very tough to get a mustang 5.0 302 on my budget. I will run the Ford tranny and I planned on the cable shifter or either fabricating a plate on the floor board that I can easily get to the top of the tranny. What vehicles did the 327 come in becuase I am told that it is an odd engine?

only grrr is going to be the sound of axles snapping. whats the point anyway, cramming such a big engibe in a little place. just asking for overheating issues and the pain if the ass making it fit then having to work on the pile

There's no way it would fit of course unless you tubed out the front end but that would take time....and not many people can say that they have 460 in their 4runner. and the GRRRRRRR would most likely kill axles unless I swapped in Dana 60's to help with SAS and just shorten the axle tubes.....  :therethere: brain is thinking well I guess I go with the 302/347 stroker becuase I like Fords and have lots of Ford Parts and Even though I really love my 4Runner the 3.0 sucks and I know Ford engines keep you posted with a detailed write up on the progress :hammerhead:

I have a 460 in the tow rig, very nice motor. Not a whole lot of power for the gas used but enough for what I need it for.

And a lot of people have had success with Chevy motors, it is all in how they are set up and how they are used. A chevy 350 will last quite a while if set up well and properly maintained, as will a Ford motor.
