I'd reccomend at least an 8" hardwood (yeah yeah, shut up  :stopit: ) like oak or a nice chunk of Hickory.

You got 6 weeks (better than the 2 weeks you thought you had hahahahhaah).  Glad the tailgate conversion went well.  I haven't talked to Phil lately so I don't know if he's back in GJ.  That's cool he offered a spot on the trail, makes it easier to get to BV that way.  Those GJ boys had a hell of a tow setup last year, sick truck & trailer for sure!

yeah- with my brother in law rebuilding his trailer in the garage making it look like a metalic monster threw up in there- he was probably getting tired of me asking if i can borrow the bender- now he has 6 more weeks of me asking. hes not gonna be happy.
the tailgate conv is awesome. i got it all put on the truck last night-hooked up the wiring and raised the glass, cut the topper down and put it on the truck for a test fit. got it prepped for fiberglass today. hopefully start glassin tomorow. im sure thats gonna be a gaggle. im sure ill have fun with that.

Without a cage, I wouldn't suggest it.  In fact, with a cage, I wouldn't suggest it.  It's a LONG way down the mtn if you fall off of the edge.  I pulled a 2' wheelstand up Cleveland 2 years ago with no cage.  Not the funnest thing I've done.

For sure!  I totally thought you were headed down the mtn. on your lid last year.  Cory & I jumped on your sliders, I honestly think you would have gone over for sure without us holding you down.  That was pretty scary.  That pretty much scared me away from getting to Cleveland last year :D

Hahahahaha, that's an edited list of stuff.  My list is 50-60 lines long.  Stuff I've been meaning to do ever since I built the 4Runner 3.5 years ago and still haven't done.  The 4Runner is drivable so technically it's ready to go.

I started the body work yesterday on the driver's side.  Got the quarterpanel welded up and laid down some bondo (first time I've ever worked with it).  It's never going to be perfect but it looks way better than it did before I started.  That's what I was shooting for.

I'm hoping to paint it over the weekend of July 10th / 11th.  If it doesn't happen that weekend, it won't be painted before the Jambo.  I'm really shooting to have it all one color for the CO4RJ :D

So it's been a little while since I walked through Carnage.  Aaron, could you (or some others) maybe list some guidelines for the trail?  I know the ones on the sign like: 35" tires, winch, lockers, spill kit, etc.  But what about for a Yota?  Are longfields a must?  Stock knuckles okay?  Is hydro-assist required?  Roll cage?  One thing I know isn't talked much about:  What about driver abilities?  Obviously, you need to be comfortable with some wheelstands, react quickly to your spotters directions, and watch the skinny pedal...  But what else should one be mindful of?

I'm just trying to get a gauge of how far off my rig and abilities are from running this trail.

I'm just trying to get a gauge of how far off my rig and abilities are from running this trail.

Carnage has gotten tough the last couple of years.  I believe they just changed the sign at the start, recommending 39's (used to be 35's).  I drove it on bald 33's 3 years ago.  My 4Runner took a beating.  Most of the sheetmetal damage on my rig has been from that trail.  The last two CO4RJ's, we have driven Carnage.  The gatekeeper is cake along with all the trail up to the start of V-notch.  With your setup, I'd suggest driving up the trail to the boulder field before V-notch.  Then walk the rest of the trail to the exit.  It's one of the toughest 1/2 mile of trail you'll find.  jarboarder1 ran it last year.  His truck took some serious sheetmetal damage.  He's on 37's, dual cases, 115+" wheelbase, bob'ed, and Longfields.  I don't think he was planning on running it again this year.

I think you could get through it on 35's.  A winch is highly recommended.  I finally got a winch this year.  I hated having to rely on somebody to pull me up the last part of the exit.  Gotta be locked F&R.  Spare parts are a must.  Some kind of chromo Longfields (27 or 30 spline) are highly recommended.  DIRTCO blew through 3 stock birfs 5 years ago.  Stock knuckles are fine but make sure the steering arms are tight before you drive it.  Hydro assist is nice but not completely necessary.  Steering will be a pregnant dog though :D

Roll cage is always recommended, no matter what kind of trails you run (now that I have a cage, I can say that ).  I say that now but I rocked the "no cage" through 2 trips through Carnage.  I was scared to death of rolling it on the exit with no cage though.

Driver ability - hard to tell if somebody has or doesn't have it just by looking at them.  We got a guy through last year, his 1st trip through Carnage.  He had a built 85.  I asked him before we started about what kind of trails he's ran.  He basically has ran almost everything tough you can run in Moab.  I felt comfortable with him running Carnage after asking him that.  He did blow a front R&P 3/4 through the trail and had to winch the last 1/4 of it.

Like I said, I'd drive the first section and then decide.  You can always run back down the to the start and run Chinamans or run up to the exit and walk back down to meet up with us.  I'm glad your asking questions about Carnage.  I just wanted to let you know that you will come out with some body damage and possibly some expensive breakage.  Is your Toyota your daily driver?  That might dictate if you run it or not.  We can chat about it at Holy Cross & Friday night at camp.

Alright, good to know.  No it's not my daily driver, but it is my transport home.  So having it few enough pieces to still make the long drive back to Fort Collins is kind of a must.  Might drive the first part if there's an okay place to turn around and come back down.  I have hydro assist and an exo in the plans for the somewhat near future, so maybe next summer.

If you are going to run it, you probably want to run the whole thing. People do the trail downhill but it isnt very wide. I ran it last year with duals, lockers, 37, longs... I took a beating but did the whole thing.

When it come to driver ability, the most important thing would have to be keeping your cool. I flopped multiple times in the v-notch and the exit completely "f"ed me. Not loosing it and keeping a level head is extremely tough 8 hours in.

My rig will be more capable this year, but I dont plan on running it. I absolutely love this trail, but Im not where I want to be to run it the way I want to.

hopefully that helps.

Well said.  After hours on the trail, you've got to keep a level head.  Jared kept cool at the exit.  I was starting to worry (I think there were several others) about getting him out of there.  He did just fine, even after dumped his truck on it's side.

OMFG BV/OCG!!!  :burnout:
What day is everyone/anyone getting to the campsite? Is Scotty going to be early to secure the site this year with his trailer? I have to fix my (uncle's truck) tow rig and find a trailer. We could be there Friday any time or Thursday night if need be. Gotta find a trailer though... U-Haul says "Your truck isn't stock so we can't legally rent you a trailer." Lame. I need more friends with trailers... or my own trailer.
