quick compression question
« on: Dec 07, 2009, 08:59:54 PM »
so my truck has 60 lbs of pressure in #2 cylinder when i pulled the plug and put a teaspoon of oil in it it jumped up to 80. I then put the plug back in it and fired it up for a minute and compression dropped back down to 60. I was told this most likely means i have bad rings. Do you guys think thats the case? or could it still maybe be in the top end like H/G or the head itself. The truck was over heated and has been sitting for about a year. it is  a 22re. Thanks for any help.

Could be rings, valves, head gasket or a combination of stuff. With just a 20lb increase with oil sounds like its time for a new engine. Pull the head and check it out.

I'm not an expert, but I would lean toward rings or cylnder wear. :twocents:

whats the compression on the other 3 cylinders
if they are 140 or so  i'd say its a bent valve or headgasket

60 is a bit low for bad rings, have to have some chunks missin for compression that low. I would say burnt up or bent valve, that what my buddies with similar compression had.

all of the other cylinders were around 130. i checked compression by pulling one spark plug at a time out.

P/O said the truck kept overheating on them so instead of fixing it they parked in a field. thats where it sat for about a year and a half untill i got it a little while ago. The starter wouldnt crank it over originally either i thought it was siezed but after messin with it i got it to finally turn over.

That's how my 81 was after the head corroded far enough so coolant blew past the sealing ring on the head gasket.  Sat for a while and seized, bumped it in 5th gear to break it loose then drove it some more  :_oops:  Changed the head and the cylinders looked like they'd been sand blasted, but after driving it a little while it still had over 150 psi in each cylinder.

Probably better off doing like you said and just drop a better engine in it, then you can go back through this one at your own pace, find a real problem and fix it without being hurried.

Sounds like now would be a good time for bigger stainless valves and some porting   Oh, and pop for a toyota head gasket, you won't regret it!  They're actually not much more than a felpro and are muuuuuch better.
