Well after many hours of reading wire diagrams and comparing wire harness I discovered many differences between the two.I have 3 complete harness. One from a 1986 4runner,one from a 1986 turbo 4x4 truck. And I also have one from a 1987 turbo 4x4 truck. All were manual trans trucks. All were very different. I started tearing out the under dash harness today in the runner. I also need to install the fuel pump harness that goes back to the tail lights. The truck harness and 4runner harness are totally different. The weird thing is the wiring for the top and window go down the other side of the truck. The truck fuse box has no provisions for that. But since I no longer have a back window or top that's no big deal.

I tried to get my 22RTE to fire, and it would cough, spit and sputter, but never ran.  Come to find out the wires that went to coil from the EFI harness were toast.  Cause toyota ran them over the hot exhaust, and not from the fender harness like on the 22RE's.  I swapped out the 22RTE for the 22RE, and the harness was just fine on the 22RE.  Nothing different.  Even though the FSM had all these items listed just for the 22RTE's that I couldn't find anywhere on my truck.

I took the entire harness out and used a ohm/volt meter on the harness and used the FSM for what the resistance each wire and sensor was supposed to show.  And I used a spare harness to splice in new wire or replace bad plugs.

I put an SR-5 dash in my old 83 just to have a tach, it was an 83 instrument cluster and plugged right in, tach didn't work???? Of course Toyota did not install the wire for the tach in the base model wiring, I did get the SR5 harness and swapped that in then the tach worked great. Doing some of the mods makes you wonder sometimes. :dunno: :welcome: :welcome:

Well it's been over a week since my last post. My wife's mom and best friend passed away last Saturday. So I haven't had time to work on the runner much. I got the whole under dash and under the hood harness out. This week I will start putting in the turbo harness. Well on a positive note i am trading my '97 Z71 for a 91 4runner. It's got sas, high steer, 4.56 gears, wangler springs, welded rear 33' boggers and a stock rebuilt turbo motor my brother in law installed. One of my best friends owns RENEGADE offroad and customs in Bozeman. I have built most of my runner in his shop after hours. I've traded parts and painted rigs and hoods and fender flairs for parts. Rob is a good guy. He is the one who owns  the runner and has not been able to sell it for over a year now. I should be picking it up next week! My plans are to do a custom paint job on it and use it for a daily driver. This one will be my pavement pounder. When I pick it up I'll post some pics.

Well me and turbo Luke changed out the wire harness. It does the same thing! It runs for 2 seconds then dies. We changed out the injectors, same crap. Then we changed out the AFM. Same! Then we changed the coil and igniter box and it runs for 3-5 seconds and dies. We have spark and fuel pressure.I don't know if the injectors are the first to stop firing or if the fuel pump relay is not getting power the whole time. Maybe it's something really dumb like a bad or not hooked up ground, or a censor not hooked up. My brother in law is coming over on Saturday with his power probe and we will find out what the hell is going on. I'm going to try and get up to Renegade and get my '91 4runner tomorrow. At least I can get in some snow wheelin' this year. There is at least 8 inches of snow in the valley and we are expecting another 3-5 this weekend. I'll keep you all posted and get some pics of my new runner soon!

Well my brother-in-law came over with his power probe and found some shorted wires in the engine harness and the under dash harness that I just installed. This is just my luck! Every project I have ever done has had a major bug like this. Oh well. Since I still have the dash apart and I have another complete turbo harness I'm going to change out the complete harness and ecu with the other one on Saturday. I went to go pick up the '91 runner and the dam fuel pump would not come on. WTF I drove it in the mud bogs in July and it worked fine. So this trade will have to wait 'til I fix mine. I know the '91 isn't going any where. Well I'll let you all know how it goes.

Well I changed out the whole harness and it runs! Some of the heater plugs don't' match but I'll figure that out this week. Now I need to put the whole dash back together. I still need to fab up a cross member for the duels. I also need to put in the taco rear and set up the gears, weld the spider gears and put in some rears up front. I want to fab up some traction bars 1 in front and 1 in the rear.I'm gonna mount them on shackles off of the cross member. Then I've got to bleed the brakes and the power steering. I still need to bolt up the shifters in. My boys have wrestling matches every weekend for the next month so it will be slow going. But I'll post some pics when I get her on the 42's.

Well I got the dash all put back together. The oil pressure and boost gauge hooked up and mounted. The shifters are all in. This coming weekend my boys have state wrestling champion ships. The next weekend I can break in the motor and get her up on the 42's. Soon I'll start a build thread with lots of pics!

Well I had a few minutes to bolt on the 42's. I'm gonna have to move the rear shackle mounts back. The new springs I put on were from a 89-94 truck. The exhaust is gonna be REAL tight. I got some header wrap to keep the heat off of my brake lines and booster.Later on this summer I might lower the engine down a few inches. I don't really want to put a body lift on I like it low. Either way I'm gonna have to re do some of the inner cooler lines. AH the fun never stops.

Well everyone I finally got to drive it! I hit 14lbs of boost and this thing really moves! The take off in first with 4.88's and the 42's is awesome! I love that turbo trans. It takes off way easier than it did with the old trans and 38's. I lugged the motor in third at about 25 mph with no boost and it did awesome. Anyone who thinks these motors have no low end torque are dead wrong. The new engine has way more power than my old one did with no boost and it had only 20,000 miles on it with a header and a cold air intake. I pulled out the old rear end and tomorrow i'm gonna put in the taco rear. I still need to rewire the brake lights and round up some rear springs for the front. I need to build a real cross member for the duels.
My brother-in-law just finished his 22re conversion in his 1980 short box. I'll try to post some pics of his truck next weekend.

good to hear you drove it,  14lbs is damn good!  how long is the engine going to handle that much boost though?  I would really like to get the intercooler installed on my engine and turn up the boost to 14 with my manual controller.  I think it could handle 14 without any problems

I got the taco rear in today. It bolted right in. The only thing I had to do was flip the hard brake line from side to side.

The engine will handle 14lbs of boost for a long time. I built it to handle 20lbs. The bottom end has forged pistons, moly rings, eagle rods, heavy duty bearings and it's balanced and blue printed. The mls head gasket keeps it all sealed up. The motor had only 103,000 miles on it when I rebuilt it. The head has no cracks and these motors are famous for it. MY friend turbo Luke's truck had over 200,000 miles on it. He threw 12-16lbs of boost at it for over 3 years with no issues. It held up fine 'til the boost controller line melted and the turbo spiked to 30lbs and popped the head gasket. It's in the machine shop getting a full rebuild right now.

Next weekend i'm gonna put the 4.88's in the rear end.
