Good brake caliper paint?
« on: Nov 11, 2009, 02:00:37 PM »
Hey all, i'm almost done with building my front axle.  All I have left to do is finish my brake upgrade by putting my rebuilt IFS calipers on it, but the calipers look nasty (from the junk yard) and the rest of the axle is so clean you could eat off it.  I know It may sound silly to paint them, but I would like to stay consistent with the look of things.

I have painted brake calipers with BBQ paint on my old roomate's car, only to have most of it flake 6 months later.......So does anyone know of a good spray paint I could pick up locally for this high heat application?

Is vht the brand name or does it stand for something?  I don't know much when it comes to paint.

I used to use just Krylon.  Got to make sure the calipers are clean though.  Take a wire wheel/brush to them and spray them down with brake cleaner.  Paint away.  Used to do this all the time when we installed custom wheels on cars.  (and wife's car too!)  And once in awhile just wipe them down good and touch them up every now and then.

Awhile back I painted my calipers red (I'm still not sure why).  I just used a can of some stuff I picked up at Pep Boys that was specifically for brake calipers.  It was applied with a supplied brush, not sprayed on.  It's held up very well for the last 5 years.  No flaking at all but of course it comes off when exposed to brake fluid, but so does everything else.  I forget the brand name but I see the stuff around still.

I just picked up some stuff (Duplicolor caliper paint with ceramic additive) from Napa last night and spent 2 hrs with a wire wheel on my angle grinder a couple cans of brake clean and a wire tooth brush.  Tonight I'm going to paint them.  We'll see how the paint holds up  :crossed:  I'll be stoked if this works well, it was only $7.00 a can.

I got 'em painted up and on.  I'll have to snap a pic tonight.

I'm still working on my hysteer though....does anyone have a clue what size mounting bolts are used in the Marlin IFS hysteer bracket kit?  Somehow I lost my hardware .... :smack:

Pretty sweet looking.  I wish I hadn't been stupid and painted mine red.  Maybe I'll repaint mine black one of these days.

I think red looks good if you have a white tuner car or some kind of a race vehicle, but let's face it, a rockcrawler isn't going to win any races.

I usually paint mine just to keep the rust to a minimum.
