who has sealed there distributer from water ?.....

i know this is mostly a "dry" type crowd.... but up here in the Pacific NW we experience this thing called rain, which causes mud and big deep puddles.... that i seem to like to play/flood my engine in  ...

Well i have tried to seal my dist many ways in the past, grease, sealant, o rings, good ole dist rubber thingy.... to no avail, i have heard of people using a small cheap compressor to pressurize there dizy but that seems a bit overkill..... and im not talking about a fully submerged dizy just a "well soaked" one..

to all those that enjoy a cool splash or go puddle jumping, I plead with you, what do you do.....

Are you sure it's the distributor giving the problems?

Wet wires, water around the plugs could do it too.

Well I live in the NW and have had my toyota up to the headlights a few times. Never had one problem. SO you sure thats its?

I have dielectric every plug on my truck one ones i can see/get to  . as for the dist it's self i have not tuched it i carry a spare/ spare plugs.
once i got water in mine  truck barley ran missing bad also had some water in the intake.

sealed mine with blue rtv around the dist cap sprayed inside with WD40,  never had a problem since, oh i also sealed the contacts on the coil and ignitor

Isn't WD40 flamable?

We used to use WD-40 everytime on a "wet" distributor.  WD-40 has water repellent properties.  Get water in there, just spray it with WD-40.
There is no real spark that arcs in the dist.  It conducts electricity through contact.  Not like your spark plug, since its a resistor that promotes the arcing of electricity to ignite the air/fuel.


Another trick of WD-40 is to spray your quad or motorcycle down with it before going out riding.  The mud and dirt will just hose right off with no real scrubbing.

There's contact from the center carbon brush to the rotor, then there's a gap from the end of the rotor to the outside contacts............

im pretty sure its the dist cap, i just put a new cap/rotor/plugs/wires on it with dielectric grease bout a month ago..  This isnt the first yota that ive had problems with water getting in the dist...

wd40 isn't flammable, the propellant is, they stoped using whatever it was and they use CO2 propellant now which is not flammable... 

I haven't had a problem with this truck yet, it has the stock spark plug rubber boot thing over the cap and it seems to work good with keeping splashed water off it all, but after looking at the water line on my engine/truck it seems i may have submerged it lol.... I have been threw this water trap before but its been raining pretty good and it must have been a bit deeper than im used to lol.....

hay cheesemaker yea know where boyscout camp up the Kilchis is (on the right past doe flat rd) watch out for that mud pit around the tree..... it WAY deeper than it used to be lol, guess its good to know my doors are pretty much water tight....

yes its very flammable (used some from a gallon can in a squeeze spray bottle to start a brush fire yesterday) however it was designed for this exact use, "to displace water from electrical components"  WD stands for "water Displacement"

ive sprayed my distributor a thousand times and even left a pool of it in there, jumped behind the wheel fired it up and drove away

well i tore it all apart today, very obvious when you take the dist cap of and there is pine needles in it lol...... one of the rubber plugs that the wires go through had come out of the housing (prob when i did the tuneup) and allowed water to enter...i did run a small amount of rtv along the o-ring to promote future water crossings
