W56D w/ t-case from W56B?
« on: Sep 26, 2009, 03:28:42 PM »
I've searched but maybe I don't know what I'm looking for. Please forgive. I have an '89 4Runner with a W56B that needs a new tranny. I've found a recently rebuilt W56D from a '92 Extra cab. Will my top shift t-case bolt up to the newer tranny? Are there other necessary modifications? What parts need swapping?

Thanks,
Rob

Yes it will bolt up, only you should have to make is putting a blockoff plate where the shifter would go in the tranny if you were using a forward shift case.

Thanks for the reply. Will the shifters be in approximately the same location?

I assume that this would also work with a crawler box, or I could just find a forward shift box...

The tranny shifter will probably be in the same place, but the case shifter will likely be a little further back.  You can usually pick up a stock forward shift case for less than a top shift, mainly cause most people want a top shift.

I don't mean to resurrect an old thread, but...

I'm now looking to replace my W56B (top shift) with a w56d tranny (forward shift). If I went this route, I would put a forward shift crawler box behind the new tranny, then put my current t-case behind the crawler box.

What will this do to my shifter locations? Will I need a new shifter boot for the tranny/crawler box?
Are there any reliability differences between a forward shift and a top shift set-up?

Thanks!
