2nd gen SR5 tilt wheel in 1st gen truck ?
« on: Sep 23, 2009, 09:33:45 PM »
I have a nice tilt wheel I would love to put in my 1st gen mainly for the tilt but it also has better switches for lights and wipers.  From what I can tell the 3 main plugs mine has are the same as whats on this 2nd gen one.  There is an extra plug on the 2nd gen which leads to the ignition.   Anyone ever swapped one over before ?  Also will the wiper intermittent function work or do I need a wiper relay for it ?
Denpending how much time I have to work on it tomorrow I might just plug it in without installing it and see if it will work.

I figured out the wiring side of it.  There is 7 plugs for a second gen ignition and 6 for a 1st gen. On the 2nd gen there is a solid brown wire which is ac2 I think.  Its not needed as it goes to the efi.  I hooked up all the wires with short connectors to test it and all works perfect.  So all I have to do is install the column which seems to mount in the same location.  I will know more tomorrow when I actually try and installing it.
I am not sure if the variable wiper is gonna work or not.  I would love to be able to adjust the delay speed of the wipers.  Will post pics and results tomorrow.

I know that a solid axle 2nd gen & the ifs 2nd gen steering colunms are different. You might want to measure the distance from the firewall to the dash mount & the fire wall to the u-joint under the hood before you go rippen & tearing only to find out that it won't mount (unless your gonna modify regardless).

Its out of a solid axle 2nd gen and I did a quick check and it looks to be the same size.  Not really all that hard to remove a column tho.

Well I got it done today.  Works good its nice not to hit my legs on wheel when getting in the truck.  It was a little more involved then I expected but once I set my mind on something its hard for me to stop.
I had to make a plug adapter so my 1st gen plug would work with 2nd gen plug.  Wasnt all that hard tho.  I had to modify the two main support holes to get it to fit in mine.  Anyhow its in and now I just need a bottom part of the plastic ignition cover.  Also I need to run a pair of wires from column to the passenger kicker panel area so I can use the intermittent wiper feature.  I traced the wiring down and it looks like its just 2 green wires.  Guess well see if I am right.
Ill post some pics later.

Here is a few pics of what it looks like and a pic of the plug adapter I made.  Still working good.  I do need to figure out how to raise the column a little more so when i tilt up its even more out of the way but my dieing trans has me more concerned.

Sorry pics suck. My phone is aweful
