Engnbldr timing chain sets
« on: Aug 17, 2009, 07:40:16 PM »
I am getting ready to do the timing chain in my 4runner and I think these are the preferred ones to use. http://www.engnbldr.com/toyota_ala_carte.htm . They offer two kits that are the same price, one with the timing cover and one with the oil pump. Is the oil pump easily replaced when doing the chain and if so is this typically what people do?

Has your block been decked during a rebuild? If so you may want to reuse your current timing chain cover if its in good shape. When i had my block machined they decked the block with the timing cover bolted to the block. The oil pump is no big deal to replace. If your engine has any kind of high mileage i would just go ahead and change the oil pump just to be on the safe side. Also make sure you get the metal guide option.

i would suggest changing your oil pump while yer that far into your engine its simple. also a fsm will tell you how to check the condition of your pump. assuming your working on a 22r or RE get the dual chain.

275xxx miles and I'm not sure of the history. I'm doing the chain as a precautionary measure. She runs like a champ and has good level compression across all 4. It is a 22re by the way. A mechanic pal of mine is going to do it for 100 bucks labor which I think is a home run since I have a good number of irons in the fire.
