   does marlin sell the timing chain set? are the guides both metals or just one side? does not say on the site. engnbldr's is only one side.

you can but the 20 r guides and cut them down -the 20r guides are steel with rubber on them

'81-82 22R had steel guides and dual chain.

my question is, has ANYBODY broken a single chain?  dual chains are horsepower eaters.  too bad you can't build a gear drive for a 22R...

i broke 2 singles in a stock application 22r, no racing, no over 4500 rpm. then went to dual chain. much better

Engnbldr.com is THE source for engine parts.  Ted is a great guy with excelent quality parts and quick shipping.  You simply cant go wrong with his stuff.

I agree that engnbldr.com  has great prices and quick shipping, but I haven't been extremely impressed with the quality of his parts.  You can do much better using world-pack or Toyota OEM parts.  IF you use engnbldr.com parts, be sure to use a toyota chain tensioner rather than the one included in the kit- I've had 2 come apart on buddies trucks.

i've never had a problem with ted's parts.  almost every internal piece(pistons, rings, bearings, oil pump, valve springs, valves, keepers etc) of my engine came from him and it's worked without a hitch.

I'm sure that 99% of it depends on who/how the parts were installed.  I didn't install the parts that failed, and have no idea how they were installed.  I did once install a metal backed timing guide set from engnbldr.com and it seemed decent.  I'm kinda spoiled by Toyota parts working at the dealership and all...

I'm needing to replace my timing chain and would it be worth putting in a new cam for a little more horspower along with the required head gasket.

Yup.  A stage II midrange cam idles smooth and makes the 22R run really well!  You can get a TRD cam at the dealership for $150 or so, or I'm sure engnbldr has 'em cheaper.

i bought the engnbldr 268c cam, kind of a nice mid range bumpstick.  if i had a 22R head i would've got the 261c but since i have a 20R head, i figured on more of a mid range grind to take advantage of my big valves and free flowing ports.

the trd off road cams work very well on the carbed engines ive use several all with great results and no problems with the smog just dont tell the smog guy what u did and u will be very happy with the power boostu will have to richen up the idle mixture but no other adjustments should be needed-

what about if I have a 22RE will the cams work in mine ok (I haven't rebuilt an engine ever and engines are a little foreign to me)

Yes, the cams will work just fine for you.  Just get a midrange cam and the engine will run great!

I used engnbldr parts when I rebuilt my re, it runs great.  As for cams I have the DOA c270, I would take the eb268 or the crane 262.  I think the crane makes more HP and TQ.

I just installed a timing chain set for DOA in my truck.  Everything you needed to do the job was included, gaskets, seals, etc.  The guides are metal backed and look really sturdy.  The only drawback, as mentioned above is it's still the single row chain.  In my application I think that it will be just fine though.
