1 1/2 has always seemed kinda small to me but it is plenty strong given the wall thickness. I use 1 3/4 for pretty much everything. Its just a all around good size, not to big not to small. For something you expect to save your body, and mabye your life, go with a min of 1.20 wall, but anything thicker than 1.25 is just extra weight, in my opinion. If you really plan to thrash this thing consider heavier wall at vunerable points, like the sliders, but keep the heavy stuff down low if possible.
Hug your kids, pray for a soldier, and don't sweat the small stuff.

Don't try to reinvent the Exoskeleton, man. Look at what others have done and pick what ya like. You're gonna mess up, but that's just part of learning.

Like Gittinit said, 1.75" tube looks great. Go with .120 wall for good strength. Not too thick, yet strong enough. Plus, 1.5" tube fits inside it nicely if you have to slug a section.

Good luck, mayne!

DOM is not needed IMHO for 99% of the people on this board. It's all about how you make use of the HREW. I know this'll spark debate, but the strength difference isn't worth it. It's all about the design

just keep the seam of the tubing to the inside so it helps the seams from splitting when you hit it on stuff :twocents:

First tube bed i did on my truck i used 1.5 .095 4130 chromo. Worked good but exspensive. My new partial exo is 1.75 .120 DOM except for the bracing which is 1.5 .120 DOM. I think the 1.75 seems more porportional than the 1.5 did. :twocents:

IMO hrew is not strong enough for something that will bne beat on the rocks. for an interior cage sure its fine if built correctly but something for an exo that will see abuse on the rocks go dom. my rear of my truck is hrew and the front is all dom and the dom takes rock abuse way better. the hrew will dent and bend pretty easy. everything is 1.5 .120 wall

hmm..... I can get 1 3/4'' x .120 wall HREW for $46 a stick...... same size DOM is over DOUBLE!!  :yikes:  I really want to use DOM so I'm debating on waiting till I have the cash money for DOM or just go HREW  ??? .....  anyone have any pics of how a DOM cage holds up compared to an HREW cage? I'd appreciate it!  :beerchug:

Hey I have built alot of cages all are out of 1 1/2 x .120 hrew tubing and none have split yet
The .095 dents easier than the .120 but none has split
Here are some pics of ones i've built in oregon
good luck on your choice!

In my experience, DOM will dent just as easy as HREW. My cage is made of 1.75,.120 wall HREW. I wheel with several DOM cages, and they get bent up just the same as mine. We wheel pretty hard, flopped countless times, and I have no doubt my cage is just as strong. The design of the cage is more critical than the manufacturing process of the tubing. The only difference IMO, is the money I saved in tubing. (3.79/ft for DOM vs. 2.27/ft. for HREW)

If you want more dent resistant tubing, go with .134 wall down low, but price and weight go up exponentionally.

Come up with a basic design before you start bending. If built right, you can use less tubing with the same amount of protection. Most exo's I see have too many tubes and have the "jungle gym" look.
To each his own, but I like to keep it simple.

My cage is only to protect my noggin, and the windshield in that order, the rest is sacrificial
