locker or duals
« on: Jun 10, 2009, 01:35:53 PM »
i was wondering if you guys could give me a little advice on wether i should get duals or locker for my 85 4runner. i live in new england and ever time i go wheeling im always riding the clutch and hammering down in the trial. i would like to creep through some sections of the trial. but i am also limited to how much i could do becuase i am open in the front. im not sure what will help me out better in the trials but i think i am leaning more towards the dual cases. let me know what you think to help me make my decsion. not sure what i want to do

I would go with the dual's and put a lunch box locker up front till I could afford a better one.

duels would be better, i am still open up front and it does not hinder me till i try and fallow the buggies.  go for the locker when you can do axles and locker at same time.

Having ran open diffs for years before my first ARB and then finally duals, duals by far are the best upgrade.  While lockers will give you more traction, being able to crawl over obstacles is a lot more of an advantage than a locker.  IMO dual cases should really be the very first upgrade, maybe even before larger tires or body protection.

You could change the low-range to a 4.7 from the stock 2.28.

A front locker is not going to help in your situation, what you need is gears....

What tire size/axle gear ratio are you currently running?

Axle gears, single case 4.7 gears, or dual cases are going to help you the most.

if money is an issue go with 4.7s in your case. Then locker in the front. Then do duals with suspension, that way you only have to do driveshafts once. I think 4.7s were one of my best mods. Dont do dual stock cases!!!! waste of money  :shocking:

Yeah the 4.7 gear set is going to be the best bang for your buck

Plus going with a single case may just save you enough $ to get a locker too. :yesnod:

Sorry what i meant is the cost vs gain ratio isnt worth it to me, after driveshaft mods, crossmember, and labor. You dont gain much more crawl ratio then just dropping in a 4.7 gear set. I have dual cases and love them but my suggestion would be to do a single 4.7 case now then down the road add a crawl box. Yes, either way you will have to modify the things listed above but this is the order I would do it in.
