« on: May 22, 2009, 04:16:46 PM »
thinking about trying to run the dusy in late july since i've never been there i have a few questions
where to park the tow rig, i'm thinking about leaving it somewhere in shaver lake but i dont know if that is allowed ?
if you were going to have a down day no wheeling which lake would you do it at ?
will the snow be melted enough?
thanks in advance when and if i decide on a date i will post it up to see whos down to go

FYI, the USFS is talking about not opening Dusy until mid August this year. This was one of the topics discussed at the meetings that nobody attended. Apparently the Yosemite toad's breeding season goes for 70 days after the snowmelt.....

I like Wishon better than Courtright or Shaver, but if you want any sort of entertainment then Shaver is the only option.

Shaver is about a hour in the crawler too courtwirte lake/ dusy trail head. The is a parking lot there at the trail head. But if you plan on running the trail it drops u out at Hunnington lake. Unless you plan on wheeling in for the day and back out?  If you plan on running the trail I would allow three days. Its possible too do it in two, but your in the truck 6-8hrs a day. Im sure hoping its gonna be open by july after reading about USFC. I have a cabin in courtwrite village we stay at, let me know when your thinking of running the trail. NO SNOW IN JULY  unless theres crazy summer storm, Ive seen it snow in Aug.   Good luck w running the trail.

PS bring a satalite phone if you plan on running the trail by yourself.

I plan on running Dusy three times this summer.

From what I've heard, the planned shortened season will not take affect until 2010, but don't quote me on this.

I missed all the meetings due to schedule conflicts. I had an exam during the Oakhurst meeting, a group study during the Visalia meeting, and a business meeting during the Fresno meeting. I was pretty pissed but BIRDDOG kept me up to speed on everything.

I really really really want to spend more time on Dusy this season. I am going to make it a priority for sure. Sorry I can't help you with tow rigs as I don't use one.

This may be true Mike, best idea is to call and confirm with the USFS before putting plans in stone I guess.....

Good for him, I'm glad to see that there are some good lines of communication between different groups.....

Well.......... the only problem with giving a commercial name to this is that the forest service is very much against any organized events in "their" forest.

However the "and friends" part sounds pretty cool, and if we can limit the group size, I don't think it will be a problem.

But when we get 20 or more rigs, or something like that, we have to apply for a permit and it turns into a huge mess unless we can prove it has nothing to do with Marlin Crawler, Inc. which would prove difficult beings the business name is part of the event name

Politics Politics Politics, yuck yuck yuck

Call it MC and Friends, don't advertise, and don't sell anything or take money for anything through the run and you should be good. Besides a group of 20+ on Dusy is just stupid anyway.

Sorry to the OP for the hi-jack. To answer one of your questions, I like to park my tow Rig along Rock Creek Rd. It connects Dinkey Creek Road with 168 @ Tamarack. If you park there it saves you about 45 mins. drive back to the trail head to get your tow rig but you do have to drive your trail rig the 45 mins. in from there.

Hey, does anyone know what species of Frog they are claiming we are endangering? I want to check their references and find out if they are bluffing or not.

Thanks

It's the Yosemite Toad, and it's not listed "endangered" yet, it's being petitioned to be listed......sounds like a load of BS to me :tantrum:

You know the funny thing is that I've been wheeling Dusy since I was in diapers and I can't remember ever finding a frog on the trail. Granted I don't wheel it as often as I like, if we are "killing" them, then why don't I see dead frogs all over the place?

This is CRAP!!! :soapbox: Can someone research that frog and find out exactly when their supposed "mating season" is and if it really is into early August? I think they are using some fake "sob story" as leverage to push us out of OUR OWN LAND THAT WE PAY FOR EVERY DAY!

According to the "expert"  :shake: the forrestry service had at the Clovis meeting, the Yosemite Toad's mating season coincides with the snow melting. Apparently during the roughly 70 days after the snow melts, the toads migrate out of the meadows and back into the forrest. Again according to the "experts" this migration takes the toads right across the paths we wheel on and they're getting slaughtered.

That was the gist of what I caught in the DEIS meeting. If anybody heard something different feel free to correct my info.

Ed Cole was saying that he wants to open Dusy by the first week in August, but it's proposed to stay closed until the 15th, whenever they get this new proposed action rolling. I don't think there is any hard science behind this, just a bunch of BS.....

Got up early and went for a bike ride up to Courtright this morning. Only really saw a couple of snow drifts in the shade. Hopefully this toad will get to romanticising and get off the trail.  :ladys-man:

Here is the link with info on the Yosemite toad. You will find the toad on charts on pages 418, 435. The main section on the toad starts on page 474.
