Got some small things done the last couple days...

Added triangulated corner floor bracing and undercoated entire thing...

Added some heavy plywood to floor, this not only made it stronger, but keeps the sides from being able to be pushed in... Bolted the floor down and siliconed up all the seams...

82juguete

wired up all the lights and added the side marker lights... tried to keep it clean and ran it through the frame with grommets at each hole... all exposed wire will get loomed soon...

And finally added the safety cables... I like these a little better than chains...

Looks like it's movin' right along!

Yea just too bad my truck's not yet... Im waiting for the correct main bearings to come in the mail so I can finish rebuilding the motor...Not being able to drive my truck is starting to get to me!    :maddest:

crawlerdad

Well if you can't drive the truck you will have plenty of time to build the trailer. It looks like you got a lot done, and it looks good. Good idea to undercoat it. That will help to seal out the weather.

Frustrating day today... Spent entire day getting what seems like NOTHING done.

Heres a preview of the lid, but it doesnt fit worth a crap!

82juguete

In theory it shouldve worked just fine... First I mounted channel on the front half of each of the sides and aluminum angle on the back half of each side, for the lid to slide into and rest on...

Heres the channel up front

Then I built 2 frames out of 3/8" square stock, and skinned them with some sheetmetal I salvaged off an old door from work.

Here you can see the 3/8" frame...

82juguete

Only problem is I mocked everything and tacked it all together in place in the channel, so I know it fit perfectly.  I had both frames, in place, fully welded and they fit perfect and the tailgate closed snugly against the lid.  Yet somehow, upon welding on the skin on the front lid, its tweaked now and is about 1" off from fitting flush on the front right corner... :dunno:  I cleaned up and called it a day before I started breaking things...

crawlerdad

Sometimes the best thing you can do is call it a day and start fresh tomorrow. When your frustrated you can miss things and take the fun out of projects. With days like this, you will appreciate the trailer more when its done. There is always ways to cover up mistakes with trim, Flashing, or paint.

Well, where is this thing now? Is it registered? Is it done? Is it collecting dust like my projects?

82juguete

Collecting dust right now because:
A) i finally fired my new motor and have been focusing effort and time on that
B) i dont have the money to finish up the little stuff and/or register it right now
C) the fact that i cant even pull it till my motor has been properly broken in and has about 3000 miles on it has kinda made me figure, whats the rush?

We'll see, if my cousin wants to tow it with his runner it might get to see a few camping trips this summer...

Nice build. I just came into an 82 that I'm parting out and will be using the back half of the truck for making a trailer to match my rig. You've done a good thing, looks great.
Did I miss another thread of yours? You mentioned that your rebuilding your motor, what happened?

Thanks...Old motor blew... new one's in, my build thread is in my signature.   I was going to go with a donor bed too but i like the look of a custom trailer... ill keep a eye out for your buildup.  Only thing buggin me now is i think ill only be able to tow it downhill until i do a 3rz or 3.4 swap or something...  :shudder:

hilux-1983

I remember now. I even posted some pics for you when you couldn't find what to do on the driver side of the motor (coolant plate was missing) :clap2:

I like to help out when I can. Plus, it's a whole easier to explain after all of the mistakes have been made on my part. Also, If i've done it and I have pics to help I'm glad to do it. I've learned A LOT from this forum too.

Thanks... havent had time to finish this thing up and now im moving out for school so its gonna be awhile... plus ive come to the realization that i can barely make it up the 4 lane with my truck by itself, i have no clue how im going to pull this thing for camping up any type of grade.  22r just isnt up to the task, so im not sure where this project is going to head.

That little thing? Your worried about towing it? Kidding me right? I have a stock 22r, 529's, 35's, 5spd and I pull a 16ft utility trailer with my toys, occasionally I have to put some kinda broke down vehicle on it. It's heavy no doubt but, that Toyota pulls it and looks good doing it. You'll be ok towing that thing around anywhere. Don worry 'bout it!!!!!

Hey if you guys are really interested in a shower? You can pick up a great tankless water heater pump and battery box for about 100.00! I use an empty 30 quart cooler for the water supply, works great. Nothing like a hot shower in the woods! drdelux

break-through.... finally got a title for it today. It probably has a lot to do with the DMV I went to, but I got no grief for having a truck axle (not to mention the fact that it sits level with my truck, and is on 33" tires that stick out enough past the trailer fenders to warrant mudflaps) I was not looking forward to the hassle, and thus been putting it off for this long, but the whole deal took about 30 minutes and I walked out with my permanent trailer liscense plate, pretty stoked.

Already getting put to use:

In the first pic you can kinda see my sweet airbag setup...not sure if I ever mentioned that in the thread. Helps the super flexy springs support loads a little better.
