Author Topic: WHATS WRONG??????? (Read 4987 times)

recently my truck started idleing at like two hundred RPM for about 5 seconds until it shuts off. when it's idleing like this it throws whit smoke from the exhaust, but I know my carb was ready to go, so I think it might be the carb. but white smoke?? has anybody experienced this or have any idea what it could be??

doesnt it blow white smoke when u blow a head gasket? but i guess then there would be coolant everywhere to. nm

White smoke is usually a blown head gasket (water in engine). Do a compression check. Look inside the oil fill cap to see if there is a muddy looking oil/water mixture. It will usually collect there if there is water present, but not always. Blue smoke= burning oil, black smoke= gasoline/running rich.

I heard that it blows white smoke when your rings are gone but I'm not sure

and it cant be the head gasket because like you said, thre would be coolant evrywhere and there is'nt, and it stays cool too.so I got no idea

Do a compression check. If it is a blown head gasket, better to catch it now. Check your plugs for a real clean one or 2 compared to the others when you pull them

well I did a compression check like 6 months ago and it was kinda low, so I did a valve job on it. I guess I'll check the oil cap first

I missed that part, that may be unburned gas vapor. Have someone smell the exhaust when it does it.

Try checking for vacuum leaks first of all. Sorry I diidn't read your post completely at first. Others have mentioned the EGR giving them problems also.

which lines would I check for leaks? and whats the EGR?by the way, thanx for the info. so could it still be the head gasket?

Could be, but I would sure check the vacuum hoses, carb base for leaks & the egr. I believe those things were just covered in a recent thread. Grimreaper or 4runnerrick gave the information in that thread.

Nope, that would be oil, and that's usually blue smoke.

Gray smoke would be a very rich condition, very common with knock sensor equiped engines if there is alot of knocking then the computer will pull the timing back and unburned fuel will get dumped out the tail pipe.

White smoke is always the sign of water leaving the cylinders. It could be cool for now, but once you've blown out 30% of the water, it'll start running warm and eventually over heat.

Retorque the head. sometimes some carbon can build up and plug the hole if its a small one. Good idea to stop driving and check it before it gets any worse if you can.

well its not my daily driver so thats good.but I'm trying to get it ready before our trip to GLAMIS (thanksgiving) and its only two months away!so I wanna fix it witha little time to test it out,if not I guess I'll take it to GLAMIS and run it till it blows.

I just had this prob, i had a blown head gasket a while back, and there was white ass smoke coming out the exaust, and the 200 idle and then death i got from when i tore my intake hose, ures is carbed so its a vaccuum leak, a tear in one of ure hoses. did it just happen or did u mod something? cause mine happened when i got my bodylift on, get back with more info and we can help

it just started doing it after I got off the freeway when I was on my way back from a local place we go wheeling, but I didnt make it on time so I didnt even wheel it at all that day,that was the first time I was gonna take it wheeling in about two months, and it just started spuddering and idleing low until it would just shut off. but it would turn back off,(still with a low idle). so it just started doing it out of the blue, I dont get it

Check for a vaccuum leak, you just gonna have to take it, get it to where it will idle low, have someone hold throttle or something, and then spray it slowly, but everywhere, with a substance such as starter fluid, carb cleaner, WB40, or that stuff. This agent acts as gasoline when it hits the hole, when you spray it near the hole, your engine will rev back up

thats when you know you've found the hole

let me know how it goes, remember to check all lines throughout the truck, a lengthy but cost effective solution

NP, if u find a leak, just get some tape

or some new hose to fix it, usually just regular old vaccuum hose, let us know how it goes

sounds like the head gaskets blown between a water jacket and combustion chamber, do your vacuum leak test, i use propane from a small unlit torch, a compression test is the best way to find a blown head gasket

take the valve cover off, 4 bolts on top of motor, you will see the cam rockers and head bolts, use a torque wrench and pull them all to about 65 lbs

but the last one i saw blowing white smoke had a crack in the #1 cylinder

GREAT NEWS!!!!!!!
well check it out , I found no leaks(

) me and a mechanic buddy of mine were workin' on my yota today and I decided to try carb cleaner, sprayed it, started up my truck and the idle was back to normal! it stays on! I even turned it off and restarted it. I let it cool down for a while and restarted it and it stays on, no more white smoke either(that I can't explain

)so it turns out I need a new carb. I checked the oil and the head gasket is good. but thanx alot to all you guys who helped me out and gave me suggestions, I really appreciate it! heres too you gauys
