Where's he located? I'd prefer not having to remove all the brackets on the runner axle, it sucks. Are 87 axles the same width?
I am going to run 5.29's open front for now, probably a spool out back. Eventually Detroits and Longs.

86-95 is all the same width yes.


He is in Sandpoint, Id as well as I am.

I'm ready to cut and turn my knuckles but would like some more info before I do it. I searched but didn't find any comprehensive threads. If anyone has a good link that would be great. I assume  ::) you can readily see when you've reached the inner tube with a cutting wheel, I'm kinda wondering how far inside the factory weld to cut, maybe a half inch? How thick is the outer tube?

Oh, and that rotor mic's at .110.

Yes, but I'm not sure when I'm doing the swap. It may be a few weeks away. It's my driver so when it goes down I'm kinda stuck as far as an exchange. I don't really know how to work it without having the axle here first and he doesn't know me from Adam.

Cut my axle tubes to turn the knuckles and set caster and pinion angle. To whom it may concern (because I looked for this info and couldn't find it) the outer tubes are 3/16" thick. I used a grinder to determine the thickness, then made my cut with a pipe cutter I rented for 15 bucks. I made my cut 3/4 of an inch from the end of the tube. I'll open it up a bit before welding. I'll set the final pinion angle and 6 degrees of caster when I do the sas and can put it under the weight of the vehicle. Putting some heat on the outer tube makes it easier to rotate as it is a pressed fit.

Got most of the parts today to finish my sas. Front 4" kit with all the garbage, rear 5" coil to leaf kit. Surgery scheduled tentatively for next weekend. Just waiting for a speedo extension cable and knuckle ball gusset kit. :werd:

It's not. It just looks weird because it's shiny and has an odd reflection on the bottom truss. Birfs came out super easy.

Started last night. pulled the rear end, fuel tank, tranny and t case. I'm wondering what the mechanism is that is on the rear crossmember that has an arm going to the axle and the rear brake line goes to. Proportioning valve maybe? What do you do with
it ?

That is a LSPV (Load Sensing Proportioning Valve) it distributres more fluid to the back brakes as you add a load to the bed or back cargo area in your case. I took mine out cause it was frozen and leaking. Then relocated the mount for the brake line so it just doesnt hang there.

Grinding makes me grouchy :snare:. Lotsa brackets and tow points out back.
Also ordered a v6 rear 3rd with a Detroit and 5.29 Yukons and 35" KM2's yesterday.

What do you guys think about my shackle angle in the rear? The first pic is compressed and the second is full droop. 5" springs with 5" shackles. I suppose they'll sag a bit too. Everything is tacked so if I have to now's the time to adjust.

Got the ifs off tonight. Note: always wear gloves when using a grinder with no guard. Pic 2 is the result of trying to grind my knuckle off. Now I feel a kinship with the runner :thumbs:. Gotta shed blood to make it real.

one time, i was using a 8 inch diam wire wheel on a  car trailer, and the wheel caught the edge, kicked back, and tore my shirt off....hell it didnt even buy me a drink first...


left me with no skin in a figure 8 shape on my chest... that was hard to explain :yupyup:

A guy I was working with one time was backgouging a full pen weld on a moment connection at face level with an 8 incher when it kicked back and sawed thru his face shield and went thru his lips to his teeth. Good example of why when you're cutting with a grinder to always have the wheel pulling away from you just in case  :thumbs:
That must have been rowdy to have a grinder disrobe you without getting totally maimed.
