Billy Goat Build Up
« on: Sep 28, 2008, 11:47:10 AM »
I bought this truck in 06 to turn it into a wheeler and keep it street legal. Its a 1980 SR5 Pickup standard cab short bed. It had A/C, P/S, a tach in the dash. It has a 20r motor with a L43 tranny.

Heres how it looked when i bought it.

I then threw some tires on it and when wheelin.

Then I listened to the guy I was wheelin with and he told me if i get stuck he`ll pull me out.

The tow strap snaped then he went off for an hour to find someone to winch me out.

I relized then that i needed upgrade my truck and thats when i became hooked.

First I went off to school at WyoTech and when i was there i decided to take the Chassis Fab class and in that class my project was my truck. A quick call to All Pro and I ordered my extreme lift kit (6"). Spring, 5150 Bilsteins, Mounts, hy-steer and all the other little things. They wouldn`t let me take any pictures when i was working on it so i only have after pictures.

I found out that all pro takes forever on there shipping so i went ahead and built an interior roll cage. no bolt in one, a real one welded to outriggers then to the frame. It was built out of 1 1/2 .120 wall DOM tubing. I had to remove the stock seat belts so i went with some 5 points.

Here are some pics of what it looks like today. still need to put my 5.29 yukons in but im still looking for the locker i want. then the 35 MTRs can go on. after that i can deal with the M8000 Warn winch bought a year ago. then on to the bumpers sliders the bucket seats and most likely more upgrades in the furture

you need to bring the top of the shocks in or else your gonna be using them as bump stops might also want to consider getting a front spring hanger to move it forward about an inch or so and will help your pinon angle. just my :twocents: but might consider getting some axle shims about 4 degrees should do. also witch wyotech did you go to? im wanting to go after i finish school im wanting to go into chassis fab hot rod and high performance power train lol looks like its gonna be bunches for mine

moving the shocks in is on the list of things to do. i sold the front spring hanger that came with the kit i bought. dam who thought it would be that important. im going to do the high pinon diff and duals to push it back a little for better angle. i went to the wyo in west sac. i regret it now. i think it was a waste of money. i took auto, chassis fab and high po engines. its a big crock of :pokinit: i think. but its all up to u. with the way the economy is all the techs around where i live are bearly pullin 40 hours a weeks and that lucky too. and with all that schooling im a diesel tech now go figure something i didnt have to go to school for. thats my :twocents:.

Got some cancer on the roof im going to fix today. Take a look its pretty bad in some spots and when it rains theres always water on the floor. Just fixed the welder last night so its time to go burn some wire.

Heres a picture of the cage painted and the four points mounted up. also the new tach I install cause the factory one was off by like 300 rpms I found out when I tried to get it smogged.

Finally an update on my truck

Painted up the rust spots on the roof.

In the cab ive made a few updates to the stereo and the parking brake. I installed a eclipse head unit and some 4 1/2" speakers. Also I put in a Jamar linelock.

Today I got bored and decided to install an Aussie Locker and some Yukon 529s

And here is it installed but i still need to set up the 529s
