20r Hard cold starting issue. Need input
« on: Mar 10, 2009, 09:58:39 PM »
My truck runs great, once it starts.  It has a cold starting problem every morning.  It will crank for 5+ seconds with no hint of firing.  I let it rest a couple seconds, then crank again and it usually needs 2 of these cycles until it fires up and runs great.  Once the truck is warm, it starts instantly.  This process has drained my battery (since I don't drive the truck much right now other than around our property, which isn't enough to keep it charged).

I was hoping someone knew whats going on, because i'm not sure where to start.  Other than it being a fuel prime issue or somthing.

Begin by removing the air cleaner lid and working the throttle by hand and check to see if the auto choke flapper closes.

Also see if the accelerator nozzle is spraying fuel into the primary venturi when you manually work the throttle.

Sounds like you are starving for fuel.

The auto choke flaps closed when I moved the throttle by hand.  I guess i'll replace the easy things, like fuel filter, maybe even the fuel pump since its leaking around its gasket.  Check the fuel lines, but I think it is something right at the carb, just not sure what.  I guess I could always tear down the carb and give it a good cleaning.

Did some searching on that, some people had luck just cleaning the passage with a strand of wire.  Should I take the 4 screws and diaphram off and clean it going in from that way?  Or is there a better way to clear it out.  Thanks

Well, I took the Accelerator Diaphragm out, then used a piece of welding wire to scrape through the passage.  That must have cleared something out, because the truck fired up instantly after sitting for 2 days.  This seemed to have fixed the problem.  Thanks again Marlin.
