hard starting
« on: Dec 15, 2007, 05:02:48 PM »
82 model 22r with weber carb rebuilt bottem end and head with lc 440 lift cam.

When the truck is cold it starts quick and idles high untill i blip the throttle then it goes on down to normal. But after driving the truck and getting it warm... when i turn it off and go to turn it back on  BEFORE it cools completley back down, its very hard to start and when it does crank up, black smoke poofs out of the tail pipe. After all that it runs awesome though. Ive tinkered with the fuel air mix and all that on the weber. Any ideas????

Do you have a fuel pressure regulator set to 3.5lbs.   if they get too much fuel this will happen.  I'm getting ready to put one in the 4Runner.

straight from Webber north america.

Hope this helps.

nope sure dont have one. I also forgot to mention it will deisel pretty bad only sometimes. Also this may be a different subject but the smoke that poofs out has turned to a blueish grey color now, like its burning a little oil just on the crankup. i sure hope not though, the motor is still brand new.

I'd try resetting your choke so that it just barley closes with a cold engine. make sure it's getting power when the key is turned on. that high rev when it's first started is the high idle cam and it's part of the choke system. mine doesn't rev high unless it's really cold. what rpm dose your truck idle at?

the float might be sticking causing gas to flood out the motor when it is shut off.  just an idea.

i set my idle down to around 800 made a big difference with the diesel at shut off. try it after the motor is completely warmed up and see if it helps.

ill try that. The only thing is that it lopes pretty bad with the idle at 900, maybe going down to 800 wont make any difference

what cam are you running? I'm running an rv cam that's not as good as I'd like. changing it is on my list. after that i might have to run a higher rpm. if it diesels then I'll install an idle stop solenoid.
