instantaneous loss of power '02 7.3 PSD
« on: Mar 02, 2009, 10:58:02 PM »
So my truck occasionally has a sudden loss of power, its instantaneous, gives a little jolt, and then comes right back up.  Seems like it always happens when I'm driving in wet weather, but it does occasionally happen when its dry.  It kinda had me leaning toward an exposed wire that was getting wet, but I'm not sure.  Conveniently, when I checked my mail I had a service announcement from ford stating my Camshaft Positioning Sensor has not been replaced yet, was wondering if that could be related?

you will most likely get less fuel mileage with the new CPS, i did when mine was replaced!  not sure if that is related to your problem though.

only way getting a new cps could affect fuel economy is if when it was replaced the injection pump was advanced

they didn't touch anything else on my truck, just the CPS.  Got roughly 2 mpg less.  its all over powerstroke forums too, most people claim to get less.

i dont think that it would be the sensor but i would get it replaced. underneth the high pressure oil pump there is a white plug in its you fuel pre heat element which is famos for shorting out . it's i lil exspensive. what you can do to check it is unplug it and go under the dash find the 30 amp fuse i think its number 4 or 5 down the right ahnd side it should be blown replace it and see if that fixes your problem.

The 7.3 powerstroke doesn't have a injection pump.

umm, all diesels have an injection pump. some brands call them rotary pumps but ford didnt use that style pump on the 7.3L, during this era only dodge used a rotary pump in the big 3 diesel truck market. now the newer diesels use a common rail setup but the 7.3L never came with that.

the 7.3 uses a high presure oil pump to lock the injectors in place and they are electronicly contoled by the pcm and the cpu.
