hey guys...
82 pickup, stock 22r
Ive been having an ongoing problem.  For the last 3 trips to the dunes in pismo, ive experienced what i suspect to be carb problems after only short periods of playing in the sand.  Past idle, i lose power, motor sputters and almost dies. but if i bring it up to almost wide open, itll run ok.  Theres just that range that dies out.  The first 2 times were remedied by lotsa carb cleaner, running fuel system treatment in the gas, and letting it sit overnight.  Last time out i repeated process and now its running ok but def not back to 100%.  I plan to rebuild the carb this weekend... but any more specific ideas of whats going on????

next, I want to just simplify the whole intake system, eliminate the snorkel and everything due to the suspension that crap is infiltrating into the carb, and just run a single edelbrock pro-flow filter well sealed to the top of the carb.  Ive seen lcengineering motors run just a simple k&n filter and was curious how to address all the vaccum lines that are supposed to hook up to the filter assembly??    Thanks in advance

ok the prob went away again but i still plan on rebuilding the carb..

I mainly want the info on the air filter... basically how do you manage all the vacuum lines to run this type of setup:

I know lots of people have done it

toyotanner

on mine i pulled vaccuum lines 1 by 1 while its running if the truck bogs  cap it off w/ a vaccuum plug. if the truck doesnt bog dont worry about it just leave the vaccuum line off and dont plug it . make sure and give it a quick rev after each line is pulled and plugged to make sure it will return to idle
and make sure that any line coming off the intake manifold is plugged.

thanks a bunch man..ill just play around with it this weekend.  All i know is i need to run a k&n with a prefilter too or something because crap getting in my carb has ruined too many trips out to the sand.  Did you just fab up a baseplate for the filter that fit the carb or what??

toyotanner

i just used the weber plate and filter and just modified the bottom to fit kind of flush with the top of the carb.... but if you go to the sand your gonna need a better seal than that

82juguete

yea after i rebuild my carb i plan on just sealing the baseplate of the filter to the top of the carb with some ultragrey silicone or something.  NOTHING is getting in but filtered air, haha... Anyways thanks again man, ill try and post up what i end up doing...

82juguete

Alright...so i got it all figured out.  Since i had trouble finding info on this (even though it wasnt really complicated at all) i decided ill post a little "how to" thread...

First I took toyotanners advice and located the one main vaccum port that needs to be capped for the truck to keep running ok... here it is

The rest of the lines i pulled are just sitting, waiting to be replaced when smog time comes around.  I will probably run little breathers on the larger 2 just to keep crap out.

Heres the baseplate of the 10" edelbrock filter i bought.  $25 bucks, not so bad...

As you can see, not a correct fit to the aisin carb flange...

82juguete

So like many things, it starts with a cardboard template...

82juguete

the tricky part is really getting the bends in the "plenum" right to clear the choke cover and bowl vent solenoid....

heres what i fabbed out of some sheet metal... i wanted to use my sick beadrolling skills to firm it up but it ended up not being necessary...

82juguete

siliconed up the welds for an airtight seal

82juguete

Now if i had just left the baseplate alone, it not only wouldve been an awkward fit, but it wouldnt have fit under the hood, so i had to trim that riser off...

82juguete

I tacked the plenum to the bottom of the baseplate

And once again sealed the whole bottom up

I told you im not messin around this time...also, if theres a port on the bottom like my filter has, dont forget to plug that up too...

toyotanner

your obviously not messing around haha i dont think i would ever spend that much time on an air filter haha GOOD WORK THOUGH!

82juguete

And heres the finished job... I also threw a breather on the valve cover to keep debris out...

Overall im very happy with not only how the engine compartment is cleaned up now, but it runs great and HAS TO BE breathing better...  time will tell if my efforts payed off and it conquers the sand dunes unscathed next time out...

Hopefully this helps someone out or encourages them to do something similar!
