Noob originally from AZ, now in the Bay Area.  I truly fell in love with 2nd Gen 4Runners, while delivering a Rural Letter Carrier's route in New River, Arizona.  My primary route vehicle had been a stock 1990 4Runner, but I also kept a much cleaner 1993 4Runner, which I used from time to time as a spare (both had 4 cylinders 8), but unfortunately neither were right hand-drive ).  Day-in and day-out that truck performed like a champ on its 87 mile, stop-and-go route, over rough dirt roads, while being overloaded with a ton of mail and getting beat on because Rural Carriers get paid by the day, not the hour, and we tend to drive a bit faster than our City Carrier counterparts.  Of course, a few things broke, and by accident, I learned about Marlin Crawler, SASes, crawler gears, etc., while searching for repair advice on websites devoted to Toyota 4x4s and R series engines.

I got a new job and moved to NorCal, and then I started to wheel my stock 1993 4Runner at Hollister Hills.  I bought an R151F and Marlin's SAS and rear leaf kit.  Last summer, I had Dan Trout from Fishmouth Fabworks armor and SAS the truck.  In September, my wife and I did the Rubicon for the first time, while attending MC-07.  We had a blast, meeting a lot of cool people from the Marlin board.

I should have checked in earlier.  Most of my activity here has involved research / searches.

My wife just bought a 1980 4x4 P/U, hoping to build it little by little.

Hey!  How have you been?  I remember you from the first day of the trip.

That 80 is sweet!

zembalayan

Yeah!  We got lucky finding this one.  It even has a nice interior.  Check out the pics.

I sometimes wish the 80 P/U was mine and the Runner was my wife's!

I will get some pics of the Runner's interior up soon--still no head liner.

As for the plans with the 1980 P/U, there are actually two sets of plans--mine and my wife's--and they differ to some extent :eyebrow:!  Right now, it is stock with the exception of the Smittybilt bumpers.

For starters, we will be immediately replacing the L43, which seems pretty rough, with an L52 HD transmission that I bought used off of craigslist.  According to the previous owner, Marlin rebuilt for the tranny for him in or around 2002, but soon after  he installed it (approx. 6,000 mi), his 22r blew up, and his subsequent V8 swap wouldn't allow reuse of the L Series tranny.

Anyway, I've got my fingers crossed that the transmission is everything he said it was.  I didn't pay too much for it so it wouldn't be a problem if I ended up just using it for Core, but of course that's not the idea.

I'd like to install the L52 with a single 4.7 case, get some sliders, tube bumpers, and hopefully lockers, and then attempt to wheel it a bit with 31s or something like that.  Maybe way down the road, we will do bigger and better suspension mods.

HOWEVER. . .

My wife said the first priority is to get power steering, even though it's just push-pull.  I am looking for used parts to do this.  So far I only have the push/pull power steering box.

I think it would be cool to have a two door 2nd Gen 4Runner that is SASed.  Those have the earlier style truck grills, and they definitely have that rare mystique, similar to the Toyota Trakker models.

Here are a couple pics I found online:

I am trying to envision exocage options allowed without the rear doors.

Here are some pics of the rear bumper work, as well as the plumbing for air, brakes, and breather.  It's all very simple.

The truck handles much better on the street/hwy than I had imagined it would.  I have not driven other set-ups to give a comparison.  I have seen this regarding shock angles:
